Hi,

I am trying to cut costs without compromising quality. There are a lot of joint supplements out there with unecessary fillers so am wondering what I should be looking for in a joint supplement??

Would feeding cooked linseed help at all?

My pony is only slightly stiff behind so just looking for something to provide a bit of comfort.

Thanks :)

ps - have previously used Premierflex plus with success but at the moment cant afford the £50 to get any more :(

I use Feedmarks Extraflex HA - which has what I need as I am feeding for prevention of future problems. Farra being a Clydesdale and the modern show type is bred to be cow hocked and very close behind.:(

I also feed instant linseed, it is great for skin and a glossy coat, digestion and also very good for joint health.

for a joint supplement to be effective it has to contain 10000mg glucosamine in each meal, chondriotin 3000mg, and msm (think) its something like 5000mg
so most supplements work out expensive !! - as most of them give costings on maintenance level for a shetland!!

try micronised linseed meal - look at charnwood milling website a sack is £30 delivered feed 100-200g a day - will last 3-4 months. it helps mine - i have given up on joint supplements just too expensive and mine is doing well on linseed - she has spavin in both hocks - also go to tesco buy some ground tumeric in a bag its about £2.00 - feed 20mg of that a day the active ingrediant curcumin is good for stiffness and arthrits and so is root ginger - just chop a small piece size of your thumb up and chuck in dinner - far cheaper.

I'm just starting my 14 yr old Warmblood on Codlevine Joint Supplement. A friend recommended it after her horse had a hock injury and she has kept him on it ever since. This supplement states it's for the older horse but her horse is only 8 and she thinks it's very effective. I think she only feeds it a 1 scoop a day which is lower than the stated does but yet still seems to make him more supple with no stiffness in the said hock. It's around £24 for a big tub which is one months supply or longer if you feed at one scoop a day. It's also helps coat and condition and possibly hooves so is a good all round supplement!

I use a new joint supplement (well new to me, racing industry have used it for a while) and am over the moon with results - I use it as a preventative measure and can actually see it working :)
I dont know whats in it, all i know is its comp legal and thats happy with me :)
