for my coursework i have to pretend to set up a livery yard form competiton horses
can anyone tell me what i definatly need in each stable, arena, tack room, feed room etc????

Haybars, water buckets / drinkers, rubber mats, lots of ventilation.

Decent surface on arena with means of maintaining it and a good fence round the outside.

Secure feed bins (metal), proper storage for feed room.

Saddle / bridle / rug racks, storage for tack room.

Probably loads more to add to this

stable - drinkers, feed bowls. 2 rings for tying up horse/haynets. high enough roof. door wide enough. 12x12ft is normal size for stables. window/natural light. all lights have safe coverings. plenty of ventilation.

arena - secure area, good surface and big enough for suitable activity. good fencing. mirrors if needed. idea of indoor or outdoor.

tack room - good security and good locks. well lit and free of vermin. ideally have bridle hooks close to door and close to saddle racks so they are close to hand. everything organised and in their corect places. lots of hooks ect. to hang tack up on. heater to stop tack from rotting. sink possibly, a table/desk is essential.

feed room - vermin proof. secure locks on door, well lit. medicince seperated in a cabinet. all supplements easy to get but high enough away from any loose horses etc. all feed well labelled with a chart for feeds for each horse.

dont forget a good horse walker with decent footing....individual paddocks, looks nicer if they are post and rail....landscaped gardens too! lunge pen?

what a fun project!

Good, reliable, knowledgable staff! Been on a few yards now on full livery and most have had good facilities but keeping good staff seems to be a real problem for some.

As for stables a real must for me would be a free draining floor for rubber mats to work well. Good, roomy well ventilated boxes with safe fixtures and fittings. A wash down area and heat lamps would be great, secure dry tackroom, good surface on the manege etc etc.

As a customer though what impresses me most is not the facilities but how the yard is run and maintained ie making the most of the facilities they have. I loathe mess, rubbish not got rid of, broken things not mended, school not maintained etc the list is endless!

fields - must be secure. good fencing ie. hedge and rail or just post and rail. no barbed wire. automatic drinkers, which are on hard standing and easy to clean. must be kept clean. field clean of all posionous plants/trees. field may be sectioned off to prevent grass from becoming horse-sick. droppings picked up regulary. shelter. good quality grass. fields if seperated must be easy accessible.

but on the yard you may need extras, ie. a solarium, a horse spa, a swimming pool, gallops, a horse walker etc.

Proper equipment for the arena: mirrors, arena letters, jumps, a sound system, possibly a viewing gallery. A storage place for the jumps. A mounting block.

Oh yes: your yard also needs one or more cats! It's not a proper yard without a proper barn cat.
