As title really what is current going rate for shavings?
Pre covid I was paying £7 per bale, and it was that way for years and years.
Beginning of last year went up to £8.50, end of last year £10
Just been to tack shop today and it’s £12.99!!
another tack shop is £11 per bale but it’s 45 mins drive so including the price of fuel it’s probably not even worth it.
is that really the going rate? How much cheaper to buy a pallet?

Haha! I’ve still got 30 bales of shavings left from last year! I’ve only used 3 bales this year! My farrier offered me £5 a bale yesterday and luckily I declined??

€9.50 buy one at a time to fluff a bed occasionally
Get a small bag of sawdust for €2 usually gives me 3 for €5

I stopped using shavings when they hit £12/bale (Vida). I have to buy through the yard and don't have storage for a pallet so my options have been more limited. I switched to miscathus and straw pellets, which is ok, but I miss the clean white of the shavings!

Are there any racecourses near you? I help my friend load up with free shavings twice a year from one of our local ones rather than it being sent to landfill. We got 113 bags in her lorry last year from 10 stables.

Ĵust ordered bedmax little flake @ £8.16 a bale (44 bales) + £20 delivery. I think with my bad maths that makes it £8.60 per bale delivered.

There were cheaper offered but prefer a known brand for low dust guaranteed

The price seems to vary enormously depending on the area and supply issues. I use straw, but my supplier has increased by 25% so I’m considering changing. Shavings round here £12 so I’ll go with something else. Where are the cheap prices everyone is quoting?

£13.25 for hunters  i use one a week, I also use a bag of wood pellets a week but they have shot up to £10 a bag so i think i might re think those, £25 a week is a lot. Its a big stable and she can be very wet and messy, this is the best combination i have found so works out cost effective in a sense. I was using a bag every 5 days of other shaving bales.

Omg!! Can I ask where you are?

£8 from the yard, unbranded small flake that is quite dusty but works really well for deep litter during the week. I'm sure they're not making much of a profit on them, if anything.

I pay approximately £5.70 for shavings from local fencing company. Shavings are about £10 plus from tack shop etc.

We do the same but we have to collect and minimum order is 50. It's a hard days work as we have to manually unpack a pallet, load and then restack at our end but it's worth the saving. However, they are not currently manufacturing so no shaving available until they start again. We are currently eking out last year's load.

Same price here it's crazy and we can't even get them at the moment anyway.

I was horrified at the price of shavings at my closest local feed store, was about £12odd for woodpecker!
Luckily a previous feedstore reopened again after a good few years, and they've got sensible prices, £8.75 for a bale of new flake.
I, however, have opted for a mix of Burlybed Light and Soft extra, £8.50 a bale and goes really quite far!

Paying £9 inc vat for a bale of Wooburn which I think are around 18kg - I buy one a week on the way home from work on a Friday, it lasts a good week or more. I'll be working in the other direction from Monday with my new job but a fellow livery has kindly offered to get one for me if I give her the money as she passes every day.

Was paying £8.66 inc vat for a bale Metsawood Stable Choice which are big bales around 22kg. Me and my fellow liveries order them every now and then on my account (all pay separately over the phone) and because they are within 20 miles radius of us we don't get charged delivery. They are still out of stock at atm which is a PITA but hopefully they will be in stock soon. Been having those since around 2014 and they are the best. We are West Midlands based.

To be honest I only use a bale of Wooburn once a week and a bag of pellets underneath once a fortnight. But my boy is exceptionally clean for a big horse. Bailey was very messy and it would take me 45 mins to muck out her stable!

Hunters in my area are now £15.99 that’s if they even have any in stock..usually not!

OMG I'm horrified by the price some of you pay. Maybe I will be in for a nasty shock tomorrow when I go to the feed merchants. They have put a sign up saying "don't blame us for the price increases, its not our fault" because people have been moaning to them.

I think the bigger the feed merchants the cheaper the product, presumably because they buy in such bulk so still put a decent mark up on but buy it in cheaper.

£11.65 for Hunters last time I bought them in November. I stock piled them and should have enough until April. I tried to order a pallet but it's impossible.
