Ok so the yard owner who usually supplies lovely straw has just got some in thats so dusty and bitty i felt ill putting it in the stable this eve.

My poor girl is on long term box rest and must be in for 3 months so i cant afford to keep her on manky straw. It has been brought to his attention as a livery who opened a bale complained and hes getting more in app.

Im hoping to go out tomo and get some in my lorry untill he sorts it out.

I pay 1.80 for a bale and its lovely quality golden straw.Im in kent.

What do you all pay for small baled straw?

ours is 1.50 a bale. but we got so flooded in our area few weeks back, its getting hard to get hold of!!!

£1.20 before it all went. There will be a shortage of bales this year due to the weather, plus the length of the straw will be shorter. On the plus side there will be plenty of rubbish hay you can use for bedding instead!

I have just paid £3.50 for a largish small bale of good quality barley straw! Yes, I did say £3.50!! I got 20 at the time but think I jumped in a bit too early (it was still very cold and wet and the bad weather looked like carrying on and they hadn't started harvesting anywhere then!) Needless to say, it's treated like gold dust! I'm in Cheshire BTW.

I wouldnt use any rubbish hay or straw to be honest. Hay is fine and hasnt gone up ( well y/o has but my old hay suppliers hasnt and its always good quailty ) its still 2.50 so im buying some to put in my lorry as y/o is more expensive not as nice and smaller bales.

My poor horse has been throught so much this year and being in 24-7 for 3 months i cant bed down on rubbish

. She used to be on shavings but im really not keen on going back down that route as i used to use 2 when she was only in at night so would use 3 on full box rest

.

In the south east we havent had flooding etc so i dont think it should be so much of a problem.

Its just interesting to find out how much others pay for good straw

.

They seem to have cut loads of hat and straw recently around here.

with the bad weather we were taking anything we could get hold of as we have a large livery yard and riding school so when our supplier ran out we asked anyone who might know of any to get us it. some has been very nice some a bit dusty and some a bit darker but some places up by us have had to go on shavings as they cannot get hold of any. and our muck man will only take straw but by the look of it they are starting to cut now soe hopefully this years will be ready soon

Have you considered investing in some rubber matting if your horse will be on long term box rest? It will save you loads of time mucking out, is beneficial for the horse and you only need a small amount of bedding.
Just a thought...?
I managed to pick some up out of local admag, paid £60 for a full stable.

I do have 2 rubber mats at the frount of my stable on the vets advise to support the damaged frount leg ( so the first 4 ft is rubber then the straw starts ) Id never consider a full stable as i personally dont like it and would put a full bed down on it anyway but thanks for the suggestion claire

About to buy some off the field and if it's much more than 75p/bale I'll be gutted. 50p/bale last year. It was perfectly ok too. And should be this year. We might not have street lighting, proper drainage and are about to fall into the sea here in East Norfolk but stuff is cheap!
