Having worn out my Dublin Jodphur boots and chaps I am looking to buy some more footwear but was wondering whether to go for chaps and jod boots or for some rding boots instead? What do you guys prefer?

But I also wear yard boots and chaps on occasion, usually when Ive nipped to the yard in my jeans and boots and sneak in a crafty ride while hubby at home with kids...keep a set of knackered chaps down there for such occasions...sneaky huh?

I always used to be johd boots and chaps as found long boots too restrictive but now my riding's come on and i have a longer leg possition i find the support helps, and i coughed up for expensive mountain horse long boots which are absolutly fab! I wear them all the time up the yard and they still come up great for doing the carriage rides. I have heard people complain that the zips break on them but i have never had a problem, i got a wide fitting though which makes me think either people don't want to admit they have big calf's (i mean if you ride and do yard work how can you not!) or the boots run up a bit narrow.

I also have long Mountain Horse riding boots and I absolutely love them! They make my ankle feel supported and secure (odd thing to say I know) but they feel better than jod boots, imo.

They last as well, and I have had these boots for nearly 5 years and they are still good as new. Amazing boots!

Cant fault mountain horse, they do long and short boots and chaps and jods and jackets and fleeces and socks.

I have had several pairs of boots now and they have all lasted between 3-5 years of heavy daily use.

For everyday riding and jumping I love joddy boots and chaps, for some reason I feel safer because i have more freedom of movement around the ankle area, seem more breathable and you can always shove them on top of your jeans if you have a comfy pair that you ride in.

I've always worn joddy boots but I fancied a pair of riding boots as they are obviously more waterproof if walking through long grass etc (which I have to do quite often) but I went to Robinsons today and tried on a few pairs and they were all too long and cut into the back of my knee

so I ended up with a pair of waterproof joddy boots and I will wear chaps too.

Hi Cary'sDB,

Not sure what kind of long boots you were trying but with leather ones, if they feel a bit too close to comfort at the back of your knee while bent (in a riding position) they do actually drop about an inch (give in the ankle) after about 3 weeks or riding in them, you may have to go through a slight pain barrier for a week but then they fit perfectly, also depends on the quality of the boot/leather etc. However rubber ones wont do this so your best off getting chaps/gaiters if you cant find any that fit you perfectly.

I've got some Dublin Venturer Joddy boots in in nuebuck brown, with some Tuffa chaps, really comfortable and light weight...and waterproof.

With regards to long boots being water proof in the wet grass, I've had all sorts of supposedly waterproof boots...and they always leak! so I live with soggy feet most of time, helps keep my heals down

for me definately jod boots and chaps, I too feel safer with them on. Besides my calfs are quite large and the only long boots I could get to fit would be made to measure - eek! I even have plain leather chaps that match my boots for shows.
