Mares or gelding and why?? I have a strong opinion that geldings are the best as the ones ive had and looked after have always been so loving and friendly! Mares that i have looked after have always been soooo mooooody! I seem to get on better with geldings! Anyway had a bit of a debate with a girl on our yard who has a mare ans she loves them as they are more reliable than geldings! is this true???

I have always preferred mares. I have had gedlings and still go back to mares. Now days I have a mares only yard and without the mix with gedlings they are much easier to keep, no more days of squeeling!

I find a good mare will give you her heart and really look after you and her self. I handle them differently to gedlings, being that bit extra sensitive.

I like both to be honest! For me it’s more to do with the horse then the gender.

I do like my boys but then Ella my mare was wonderful too, so I can’t choice.

I've had good and bad mares and geldings, so no real preference. Got two mares at the moment though, and wouldn't change them for anything.

I would say that geldings are more reliable than mares as they don't have the hormone issues, but a mare on a good day will outshine a gelding.

i have always prefered geldings untill recently. now i love mares, i think you can have such a good bond with a mare and they have abit more spark, i agree that a mare on a good day will outshine a gelding.

I prefer mares. I've mainly had mares so i'm biased, but most of the geldings i've had have been grumpy all the time - at least mares are only moody sometimes! I agree that on a good day a mare will outshine a gelding, and the bad days just make the good days better. I think mares have more personality too.

I think there's alot of factors which make a horse good or bad, both mares or geldings.

I have had both. Don't really have a preference. My mares can be a bit girthy but my gelding was a bit bolshy. All just adds to their character.

I prefer mares, they have more spark and have all been a lot more itellegent than the geldings i have had. The have also done wonders for my riding as the geldings seem to let you get away with things and cover up your mistakes whereas the mares i have had let you know about it!!!

My mare is also very loving whereas my gelding couldn't care less!!

I don't really mind, I have had both when I was younger. When I was looking for a horse again I looked at both and had no opinions either way...just happened I fell in love with a gelding! They both have their downsides...friends tell me horra stories of mares behaviour when in season...although I think geldings can be difficult in their own way too.
My boy was gelded late because he was destined for the show ring, so he has plenty of attitude in him...which can be as trying as any mare in season!!!

to behonest i dont mind either i dont think that the sex of the horse has a overally big affect on a horses behaviour u can get just as nasty geldings as mares hehe.

and come on girls who doesnt have days where they wanna be left alone??

I have a mare and a gelding I dont have a preferance only that the gelding is cleaner in the stable. I bred them both and backed them myself both treated the same way. However my mare can be very bolshy buts she is a typical welsh.

I think geldings are easier, and George is just a treasure, but I think if I were ever buying again I would buy a mare.

Yes they can be moody, nowhere near as tolerant of being smooched and hugged etc, but I think they are more switched on and just generally more aware (but in a good way

I love the fact that if a mare loves you you know she means it, an easy gelding is for me slightly less rewarding (but easier on the blood pressure

I think mares are a lot more loving and the bond you can have with a mare will be far more special than with a gelding. But I also think it has to be the right mare. Mares are more a 1 person horse, they like to feel special.
IMO if you have less time to spend with a horse then buy a gelding as they tend to be happy either way and are less demanding.

Always had geldings, would of course consider a mare in the future, but having been pulled over and then kicked in the head by one as she was having an off day, i'd be weary of their moods!!!

i like both, but i have a soft spot for mares as i feel there more affectiate and will really try hard for you but perhaps thats because i ride a mare.

Mares just have something for me, I agree they tend to be more 1 person oriented and seem much more loving - I have had two geldings who only love me when I am bearing edilble gifts. My Mares will sometimes just come and be with me.
