Gelding as their moods seem to be more even, & in my experience with owning both, they tend to do as they're told rather than arguing the toss.

My geldings have tended to be more affectionate & my mares more aloof?

mares - stroppy. tempremental and difficult but when you get the right one - they'll give you everything

mare because if u work with them and get them on to your wavelength u can get results!I also have a mare-chestnut one at that and really have a special bond with her!

I would say mares. I have had both, and have known some lovely geldings, but I think a mare will ultimately try harder for you. That said, I dont think you can truly befriend a mare as you can a gelding - mares are quite feline in personality, whereas geldings are more like dogs!

I've voted Stallion, only because out of all the horses we have on the yard, he is the most easy, quiet laid back chap there is! He is absolutely no trouble to handle, turnout or ride. He's only 4 and never covered so doesn't know what hes actually got!

He turns out next to mares, has mares tied up near him to clip and never bats an eyelid - but time will tell, ask me again next year, might be a different vote!!

Hmmm, well I'd have always said a gelding, but see my post re explosive horse and now I'm not sure.

I think it depends on the weather, your mood, their mood and everything else imbetween!!! I personally find geldings more consistent and affable as I can be a bit highly strung - maybe my horse senses this and is reacting.

A good mare, a gelding is a full stop. If anything happens so then can not be ridden, then unless you can afford an expensive lawn mower, they end up being PTS. A decent mare can at least be breed from. Plus I like the fact a mare is entire, & there are no scabby areas to clean!

I put geldings, all the horses I've known I've always bonded best with the geldings. Before buying George I was definately looking for a gelding as I felt one would be calmer and easier for me to deal with as a first horse.

I've had geldings on loan in the past and there was one special one but in general i think mares go that extra mile when you have that bond, they have guts and attitude which i like,i now have 2 mares and they both are lovely,i don't think i'll ever actually buy a gelding in the future.Mares all the way for me.

I'm a mare fan but have a super gelding too who's got a mare like personality...won't take any rubbish from anyone but tries his hardest if you are fair with him

i can get on with anything, tbh, because they're all individuals, so you can't generalise (for instance the two bay geldings i've bred were a LOT more difficult than the two chestnut mares, who were both very sweet and easy horses!)
however, from my own experience, i've found that when it really comes to the crunch xc, mares, if they've been trained kindly and correctly, have a real conscience and WANT to do it for me, even if it totally fluff it up.
i've had 3 incidences at 3 day events on mares where i have totally mucked up my line to a very skinny fence, (usually the bogey fence) because of a downhill approach, or a trip, or a general moment of rider uselessness, and the mare, on the buckle end and with no real help or direction from me at all, has put herself straight and jumped the fence with no fuss at all (when it would have been far easier for her to run past it) and has then carried on and jumped the next fences fine, without holding my error against me! that is the mark of a REALLY good generous horse, in my book. so, i particularly love my mares!
