Could I have your thoughts on this horse for sale please?

A friend is thinking about viewing him next week and she's asked me to go with her (more for company on the journey, and not for my expertise on horse buying, lol)

He is 6yrs old, irish cob, 15hh gelding. That's all we know at this stage. Has cubbed and the ad says he has good flatwork. He is up for £3500. Is that a good price?

What do you think about his conformation?

He stands over himself, is very blocky in the shoulder and looks to have a long, weak back. He also looks very thick through the jowl.
Not my cup of tea but he'd probably do a low level job for someone
 
I like him and if you could build that backend up - it looks weak at the mo - hog and trim you would have a very nice RC showcob.
 
too long in the back, would not do well in a show cob class. you would have to build up the back end too. if you cover the hind end with your hand and then do the opposite, and look at the hind, it looks like two different horses. yes with work and muscle he/she will change shape a bit, but you cant get away from the fact that he has a weak back. this is where he is going to carry your weight. you might be fine and never have a problem, but dont think i would take the risk. too much money as well. horses like this are really cheap in ireland. doesnt cost much for a day trip on the plane.

The angle of the pic emphasises his front end and does no favours to his back end. It also makes him look as if he stands under himself a bit - but he looks better in the trotting photo.

I'd put money on him being VERY close to pure ID (probably pure) - a lot of ID breeders in Ireland just get a generic passport for the colts they geld because it's cheaper! The BEST HW cobs are often small pure IDs - remember Polaris!

He IS a bit flat-footed (a common problem with the breed). But if he was totally free of conformation faults he would NOT be cheap in Ireland - even on today's market!! RID geldings who'll make the size for HW cob classes are like hen's teeth!!

You'd need more photos - especially full side on - to be sure - but on those pics, I'd say he's worth a look.
