I am planning to start competing again this year and I wanted people's advice on the best jackets and jods for the job. I will be competing in BSJA unaffiliated competitions to start with and I am keen to look as smart as possible - we are aiming for style over substance

Seeing as the last time I competed I was still wearing my Pony Club tie (about 15 years ago

) I am a bit lost about where to start. Any thoughts?

Ooooo! Exciting!
I was still wearing tweed jacket for everything until before xmas, I treated myself to a navy jacket (they do look much smarter) pretty much either tweed or navy (i dont like black at all) and as you are blessed with an equally handsome horse as mine, please don't do bling!!!!
Not sre if I like the new type of hats, I have only just got used to the GPA ones!

White jods/breeches, a must if you are going for style over substance, a nice Navy or Black jacket i think still look the smartest and a GPA hat...I am not keen on some of the newer ones, they look silly to me but I think the GPAs are the smartest looking! If you are a lady, a nice show shirt with the neck that means you don't have to wear a stock or tie, with your initials embroidered on the front of the collar and then some lovely shiny boots... then I will think you will look the part...

Your horse, you can always go for BLING to make him or her stand out

SCostello, Dont you dare put bling on your beautiful horse!

Not going to do the bling thing on my beastie as I do think he is too handsome for that. Although I did buy him a snazzy Jeffries competition breastplate

So who does the best white jods? I was thinking with the jacket of going for a Pikeur (but mainly because I don't really know any others).

The Equiport jackets are BEAUTIFUL! they do cost alot, but they are so nice. I still love putting mine on!!
White jods - I like the Tagg ones as they are nice and stretchy, last a while, dont discolour, are warmer than some (not as thin) and are only about £50 unlike most which are about £70+. The eurostar ones are quite nice too. I found the Pikeur ones have big sizes.

I was actually kidding about the bling... its not really my cup of tea... but I stand by my opinion of what the rider should wear

I really like the Pikeur pinstripe jackets, have promised myself if I actually go jumping enough I'll get myself one (need to loose a couple of stone first though), they are lovely in grey with white shirt and jods and black hat and boots....

Just now I have blue/grey tweed and wear it with white jods and shirt and blue hat...

pikeur and equiport jacket are nice. also kingsland do some really nice ones now, normally in the middle price range of the other two. i think white or beige is fine, however do not like what i saw at BSJA competiton the other day. saw a very well known rider wearing grey jodhpurs, dark grey which aside from not really being allowed were not smart at all.

anyway off topic!! you can get very smart/ comfortable breeches by mark todd which for really smart ones go from 39.99 to 49.99 and last for ages. i have tried all sorts of jodhs including some really expensive ones and these are by far the best IMO. can get from old dairy saddlery.

I've got a dark (bottle) green jacket with Navy velvet on the pockets & collar & gold piping. I take a bit of stick for it at the yard but I love it.

It was made to order years ago & it is something a bit different. Having the blue bits means it matches my navy blue hat.
I agree that the GPA hats look good but they are quite expensive. The Champion & Harry Hall ones with the silver strip down the front are nice & a bit less pricey.

what happened to just a smart navy/tweed jacket with a smart navy velvet hat with a flesh strap or just a smart hatsilk, then a shirt and stock or tie? with Beige, Canary jods

i hate all that embroidered stuff and long plaits and stripey bits down hats!
mad.gif
i dont want to offend anyone and im not meaning to i just dont see any problem with a smart stock and navy jacket with plain coloured hat! whats with all the "showjumper" stuff!!!!
