What do you think are the worst inventions of the horse world....

[ QUOTE ]
Mikmar's are a decent bit of kit if used correctly...as is a Sam Marsh pelham..i use a Sam Marsh on my Cob.

[/ QUOTE ]
I think thats where the problem lies JM, not enough people have enough knowledge to use these bits correctly. Personally I have probably used every bit known to man in the past with horses and ponies to jump or drive or whatever, and time and time again in recent years have gone back to a double bridle when nothing else seems to work.

No take Neck Covers off the list

They mean I don't have to get up at a stupid hour of the morning to plait up as can do it the night before. Our average setting off time is around 6.30am!!

mikmar bits are horrible I dont like them
Cribbing collas to my horse cribs but id never use one and twiches I hate them I know they serve a purpose but i really dont like them.

Would anyone mind if I ask why neck covers and hood are on the list?

I have been raving about their invention 2 posts up

I wouldn't use them everyday but will the night before a show... blame the grey hippo!

gadgets /rider aids (i.e. draw reins/martigales ect.) i hate gadgets, but i know there is a time and place for everything (well most things), though i do use something, but as soon as i don't need them they are gone.

Have always had horses out all year round with no neck covers and not one has every got cold. I prefer putting horses out with a little on them as possible and preferably naked so the fewer things on the better. And hoods... urgh, horrible things. Accident waiting to happen.

Obviously all personal opinions and each to their own though

The 'barefoot' schools of trimmers, KC LaPierre and Strasser being two egos that have been allowed to run rampant leaving animal welfare and common sense far behind.

Yes I never used to use neck covers until I got a grey... that's worse isn't it! As it's purely for vanity rather than comfort

Does save a lot of time though and the ones I have are all integrated and seem quite secure so far *touches wood madly* Plus they are only out during the day (I'll keep trying to reassure myself here lol)

The Pelham Roundings- what idiot thought those up? If you can't handle two reins, don't ride in a pelham. To me, they totally defeat the point of a pelham with a curb rein and curb chain.

I think Dutch gags/bubble bits/3 ring snaffles, whatever, should all be confined to the bottom of the tack cupboard- permanently. The action is confused and pointless.

Have never understood why neck covers are designed with the horses head level. My boys head is on the floor eating all day and that just pulls at everything and looks uncomfortable.

Hahaha, HHO is such an opiniated bunch! Surely there is a possibility of certain things working for some horses/owners, but not so well for others...?

[/ QUOTE ]

I see you have joined the Club in sharing your opinion then;)

Ask a horse their opinion of the question and I wonder how many would say "Riders!" ?
wink.gif

Ha ha Enfys I am sure my horse would agree!

I personally have to say that all this pink horse gear flying around is a real pet hate. I can just about take it from a 10 year old with a pony but come on it really is - eeeuuuurgh!!

Tee hee - I use lots of the 'worst inventions' on here - well slap my wrist!

For me, the worst invention is 'barefoot'. I have no problem with unshod horses - when I was a girl, most wee native ponies weren't shod. This whole 'barefoot' movement seems like a religion. Horses are either shod or unshod - logically they can't be 'barefoot' as they don't have feet - anthropomorphism at its worst.

But what do I know? I use fleece rugs, travel boots, roundings, 3 ring bits, neck covers....the list is endless....

I have always poo-poo'd those hoof boots - but I have never used them or known anybody who had used them. How can one of those fit correctly and not cause pressure points somewhere?

[/ QUOTE ]

Do you mean Old Mac type hoof boots? Cos I use them and they are fantastic! I can see where you are coming from if you have no experience of them at all and I was dubious to start with but tried them as my 28 yr old boy HAS to be barefoot due to suffereing concussion when shod, plus he is lazy on one front foot due to previous knee injury.

Had to stop hacking on roads cos of this until I tried Old Macs! He loves his 'trainers', we can hack for hours, he can walk, trott, canter and gallop (trust me!) he feels no rough roads or gravel, he can't scrap his toe away plus cos they have this sprung sole thingy they have actually helped keep the concussion at bay! They do not cause him any pressure points or sore bits - I don't know how but they don't at all !!
grin.gif

They have extended his working life - so are worth the very expensive price tag!!

Treeless saddles
Pink stuff
Diamante stuff
Anything that makes the rider think the horse is working from behind when it clearly isn't
Flash nosebands used automatically instead of the rider taking time to check if there's another reason the horse is opening its mouth, such as sharp teeth or an ill-fitting bit
Grooming machines - useless for anything with mud on it or shedding its coat
Leg straps
Rollkur

Diamante anything and also that R S Tor thingy. What a numpty invention!!

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry what's an R S Tor thingy???

I thought I'd seen a lot of numpty inventions but this one has escaped me!!!

My pet peeves, diamante and pink stuff for horses and riders. Makes out like anyone interested in horses wants to go out looking like horseback barbie!

[/ QUOTE ]

Strasser I concur, but my horse has just passed the third anniversary of when she would have been PTS if it hadn't been for a KCLP equine podiatrist. That's 3 years quality, sound and pain free life she wouldn't have had, and I hope many more to come.

Anyway back to the subject, the most useless invention is those cackhanded skip and rake things with long handles.

fleece rugs and boxing boots..

[/ QUOTE ]
Surely you don't include PINK fleece rugs??
blush.gif

Actually, you're right; it's hideously impractical (that goes for the colour as well) and stretchy... but PF looks soooooo purrdy in it
tongue.gif

I own a set of travel boots that won't stay up *rolls eyes*
