ok well this horse im riding his owner told me yesterday that he doesn't like having his mane pulled. so i asked if she uses a solo comb and she told me that she cuts it straight across to just a bit longer than its supposed to be, but then she cuts 'upwards' slightly - like a hairdresser would do if they were giving you a choppy cut - not a blunt cut. ( i think, im not a hairdresser!) at the moment his mane is longish, so i couldn't see exactly what the outcome was like.

what do you guys think, do you think it would look horrendous? and what about plaiting? has anyone else done this? xxx

Yes i've done it, my horse wont have his mane pulled and I couldn't get the hang of the solo comb, but he is a Welshie so only gets a tidy up so not sure how it would work out for a shorter mane.

I do very similar with my mare's mane, but thin it first with a rake. A lot of showjumpers do this to get such a straight finish as well.

I bought a solo Comb a month or s back and did both my boys mane's with that, Id neverused one so was surprised at how good it looked!

My friend cuts her horse's mane with scissors in the way you described, it looks fine.

I trim my horses mane with scissors and then feather into the bottom to make it look more "natural" and less severe. She has quite a thin mane except one thickish patch in the middle which I use proper thinning scissors on to even it all out. (Otherwise I get 3 golfball sized plaits in the middle of her neck and the rest normal sized which looks a bit odd

I did this with Chex mane before I had to hog him. It looked the same as being pulled, but without having to painfully rip his hair out

I use a solo comb but you cant beat a pulled mane and tail. If yours is difficult you could always pull a few out after each ride, might take a month to do if you ride regular but it works on those ones that dont like it too much...
PS. all mine are natives but have tidy ups before a show..

I do alot of SJ-ing with my two and cut both of their manes with scissors. It pretty common place, just dont go too short! Start longer than you want so that you have room to work with!

I do that with my horse and people comment on how nice it looks. It looks like its been pulled. He is a TB tho and I dont think it would really work so well on a native with a bushier mane!
