Hi everyone,
I have an arab on loan and have had him since november, he lost a bit of weight and then lost some more, i think he is too skinny and so does another girl on the yard, i have tried lots of different things to get him to put on weight and at the moment he is on 2pounds of winergy equilibrium low with sugarbeet (morn and night) 4/5 slabs of hay hlf a bucket of dengie hi-fi with some carrots and he's out in the day with a good amount of grass. At the moment he is putting weight on and starting to look better, i will probably mainly determine when he looks well by just looking at him but was just wondering what you all think is a good average weight for an arab, he is 15.3hh.
Thanks in advance!!!

I don't claim to be an expert but I do have an arab. So here is my penny's worth:
My horse is a purebred arab, mostly Crabbet blood and much of the rest Polish. He is 11 yrs old and 14.3. By the weight tape he weighs 400kg. You can just feel his ribs and he looks fine.
Without a picture it's hard to say but I shouldn't have thought your arab needed to be any heavier. Can you see his ribs? If not, can you feel them?
The usual guidelines apply really.
Cheers.

We need a picture! How old is he? I work with Arabs and have to say that have always found them very good doers, we struggle to keep the weight off them! Does he have adlib hay/haylage? His weight will also depend on what type of Arab he is-ours are fairly large ridden Arabs so I would say between 450-500kg (but they are big!)

Hello!!!!! Glad to see you finally got on here

Take some pics and put them on here for people to see - that is the best way of finding out what people think about his weight

I have a 15.3 Polish Arab that does endurance (sometimes!), is out 24/7 and currently weighs around 500kg. He's a very good doer and I think ATM he's too fat, but because of a tendon injury he hasn't been doing the normal amount of fittening work.

When fully fit I would expect him to weigh in around 470kg. A lot depends on their breeding - he's very chunky and that's typical of Polish Arabs; if that's yours in your avatar, then he looks much finer. (It's a very small pic and I'm not even 100% sure it's an Arab!)

Mine is a pure polish arab and almost exactly 15hh. Competition (eventing) fit he weighs in according to weigh tape at about 425kg. So depending on build yours wouldn't necessarily be much more than about 470 - my russian trakhener mare is 16hh and she is about 520 on weightape abd obviously has more bone etc that J does.

My 15.2 Crabbet x Russian mare is 475kg. She is a substantial big boned type if that helps. She was a disgraceful 497kg in Jan 09 during her holidays when she was scoffing too much round bale!
