Ours are not backed until 4/5 . They load/get used to tack/clippers/rugs/traffic/cows/sheep and walking over things but that's about it. Nico is 5 but still immature so not yet backed, he lunges but not a lot, just to teach him the voice commands, he pops a little jump, or trots over poles but never for more than a few mins. He also long lines. Of the seven youngsters we have had not one was backed at three or under and they are sound healthy horses in their teens and twenties. On the other hand two cobs I bought fro a "riding school" who were backed and working at just three both have been on off lame/stiff for years, both from their early teens, so too much too soon can cause serious issues.
