What do you think is the right level of work for a 3 year old...

Ours are not backed until 4/5 . They load/get used to tack/clippers/rugs/traffic/cows/sheep and walking over things but that's about it. Nico is 5 but still immature so not yet backed, he lunges but not a lot, just to teach him the voice commands, he pops a little jump, or trots over poles but never for more than a few mins. He also long lines. Of the seven youngsters we have had not one was backed at three or under and they are sound healthy horses in their teens and twenties. On the other hand two cobs I bought fro a "riding school" who were backed and working at just three both have been on off lame/stiff for years, both from their early teens, so too much too soon can cause serious issues.
 
Interesting stuff.

Would you be put off buying one that appeared to have done quite a bit? Has the damage potentially been done? Work the risk if you then back off and let him chill and mature for the next few months or take your cheque book and run for the hills?
 
Having broken in 2 horses in the last couple of years who had wildly different handling, I am erring in favour of youngsters who have had very little handling. I would consequently want my 3 year old to probably do nothing.


Since I wouldn't be doing any proper work till 4 year old (handling and breaking wise) I would want to be able to catch horse hold it for the farrier and vet and that's pretty much it.

I have gone right off horses who are over handled as babies and really like our horse who was unhandled aside from the basics until he was nearly 5.
 
My 3.5yo is still out on pasture, being a baby horse.
She looks so immature I just can't imagine the thought of doing anything with her. She's done a few youngstock shows and is well handled, but the rest will wait. Would like to sit on her next year.
