Shiney healthy coat, looks bright.
A bit underweight though for May..you should be able to feel his ribs when pressing gently, but shouldn't be able to see them.
Feeding a bit of sugar beet and oil is good for golden oldies.
S :-)

POssably a bit thin but he has got that oldies dropped belly, where they seem to carry their weight lower in there body, lie below the ribs

do any of you actually own old horses? he has his teeth done every 6 months, is alfa a oil, speedi beet, and senior conditioning at the recomended amount per day

He's very similar condition to Chex field pal, who is also about 30, and fed on the same diet! I think the muscle wastage makes them look thinner than they are, at least it does with Chex pal. I'd say he looks fine

There's no need to get defensive. We're only responding to the question that you asked.

I don't think anyone was being nasty about his condition, just pointing out that his *is* a bit on the thin side.

He looks fine to me for an old gent! (same sort of state as our 27 year old section a, but yours has lost more coat than our one has)

How does your one manage with hay/haylage? Ours has quite a struggle if he takes too big a mouthful lol

i was just asking a questions, are you comparing him to your own horse of say 10 years old or an oldie

if hes not in work id say hes fine. i had a pony of 33 still in full work, her bum/ hips were the same as his but she had more on her back, from where she still had the muscle tone. and the 25 yr old at our yard is a simular shape but with a bit more muscle as he's still in work.

i think hes fine, iv seen much worse in horses not as old. what ever your doing its working.

he has not eat hay or haylage for about 2 winters now he can't chew it , he has adlib senior hi fi but he doesn't really eat it, this year i kept a 2 acres field for his winter use and that got them through

most of the horses in our yard are old 36 was the most recent oldie, they look spot on some of them are overweight if anything !!! and are 16 hh + so not little chunky ponies,it just depends on the horse and how well he ages really, nothing detrimentle towards you

I agree that some horses look better than others when they get older. I think it's great you've got him to his 30's! If he can't eat hay or haylage, can he eat grass?

I think he's a little thin but then it must be quite a job if he doesnt eat hay and doesnt really like his ablib senior hi-fi. Have you tried changing the hi-fi for some other soft chaff? Chaffs like Apple Chaff are really nice and soft to chew (softer than hi-fi I find, which my horses got bored of) and since he probably wont gorge himself on it then you'd think it would be ok to feed ablib. Otherwise, is he on an all round vit & min supplement?

Id just try to get as much feed into him as possible, like 3 feeds a day if possible. But you sound like you know what you're doing

grass and his hard feed was the only thing that kept him alive this winter, i did try veteran mollichaf aswell but he would eat it, and since the spring grass come through he will only eat 1 fed a day he just waste the rest
