How many of you have horse insurance ? Ive just got my new quote through and its higher probably because she is 16 now, excess 500 quid 3500 per incident for vets fees, thinking of joining the bhs and getting the public liability and personal accident one instead and paying for the vets fees by a loan or something if something big should happen , what do you all think and who is the best insurer ?

I would always have insurance just incase some very expensive vet emergency came along that I couldn't afford to pay for and the horse would die without it but I know some people on here pay the equivalent of each months insurance into a specific account.
I am with amtrust equine and am very happy with them.

I elected not to pay for vets fees in my insurance and now have a £600 in vets bills to find and he's just about to start remedial farriery which I'll be paying £80/month for ... think carefully....

I'm going to join the bhs on gold membership to enable me to have the minimal liability and personal accident insurance for both of mine (equivalent to £5pm for both!!), but I'm also worried about any vets bills that may crop up. I dont mind if it's in the hundreds but when it gets into the thousands I'll struggle!

After totting up my vets bills and finding it around £11000 I wouldnt be without. My only regret is that horse never came sound. You never think its going to happen to you but things change.

Ive recently cancelled my insurance policies as with the recent price hikes and the various ridiculous exclusions placed on the policies i couldn't justify spending £2k+ before the price increases each year on insurance. I've now taken out the BHS Gold Membership and im already a BD member so im covered liability wise. I've put £3000 on one side ready in case, if i don't use it then it's saved ready for the next year to be added to and if it is used, well then, thats just horses for you!!

Ive toyed with the idea of cancelling my insurance but it would be just my luck for something major to happen. A couple of years ago I claimed £5k for a tooth problem/op/etc, then shortly after another £5k for a fractured leg! Even putting my policy money away each month for 20 yrs wouldnt have even covered that.
Talked myself in to keeping it again now

I always have mine insured, I am having one of them treated at the moment, and the bill is nearly £5k. My other mare, we claimed so may times from the insurance they insisted on a letter from the vet to clear her before they would carry one. I would never was to be put in the possition that I couldn't have my horse treated as I couldn't afford it.

my opinion on horse insurance is..............

its a load of expensive cr*p, over priced and with more holes than a haynet, probably worth it once a blue moon,

i had so much grief from mine over a minor injury & when her renewal came through with so many 'NOT COVERED' that it was ridiculous, so i stopped buying,

my lot are not expensive competition horses & their 3rd party cover is included in the house insurance free anyway.

i have an arrangement with my *vet to pay any large bills off in chunks as & when i can, he knows i will, i have before.

*in my opinion some vets go over the top when they know a horse has insurance, not all vets but a few seem to?
