What do you think of the sentence?

Its a difficult question to answer , i'm not sure what I would 'like' to see but sadly I personally don't think that any fine or ban will stop people like this

What sort of homes is SHE going to find for the other horses??
They should have been taken off her also.
Sentence is far to lenient IMO.A life ban on keeping any animal should be applied to her. I waited many years to own a horse and it is a reponsibility that you should take very seriously. I took a keen interest in two old horses (feeding them in the summer as they had no grass) they where skin on bone. RSPCA took so long to get the owners to do bassic things, like having feet trimmed, they had long badly cracked hooves. I was lying in hospital a one point with a life threatening illness, asking my daughter to check they where ok. The owner did't deserve to have the poor horses. I don't know where they are now or if they are still alive, tried to track them down with no luck. Some people should not be allowed to own animals at all. The law should come down hard on these people.
Sorry turned into a big rant.

I'd like to know a bit more on the story before I judge. It only says the mare had no grass or hay and was emaciated. It doesn't say WHY? There could be many reasons for the owner neglecting her.
Of course, leaving her to starve was neglect, but the fact that she has been asked to rehome her own horses suggests it's not as black and white as it seems.

mmm sorry but I have to disagree with that remark. Whilst almost every situation is not black and white there is no way I can condone any neglect of any animal ( or indeed child) in any circumstance. There is simply no excuse never!
If the person had been ill be it physically or mentally then surely there were people this lady could have contacted for help. If not family or friends then what about the various animal welfare organisations and charities dotted around the country? Surely if this person had needed help then the help is very much out there if people could get off their righteous backside and ASK for it.
Likewise if money had been an issue then again this person like thousands of many others should have the ability to accept defeat, forget about their bloody pride and go and seek help!
While it is true many animals get neglected for all sorts of reasons it is also true that many individuals do not seek the help that they and their animals need. Instead preferring to let the situation escalate to such a state that the animals end up in need of rescuing if not already dead.
As for those that allow their animals to suffer as a result of sheer ignorance and being totally inept or not intelligent enough to provide even the most basic of care for their animals then it does beggar the question how the bloody hell do these people obtain the animals in the first place? In some cases there has to be some apportion of blame to those that allowed the animals to fall into the hands of people who cannot indeed care for them.
Education, licensing and basic animal care courses should be the way forward especially when it comes to the care, welfare and ownership of larger animals such as horses.

Yeah I can understand the reasoning behind not wanting to comment until the full story is heard however for me personally hearing the full story would have little bearing on my judgement. Fact was that she was responsible for that mare. This mare had no hay or feed was emaciated, pregnant and with another foal at foot. Along with other horses they were obviously being kept in totally unsuitable field conditions. Whoever heard of horses eating Christmas trees?
Perhaps this woman has connections which is why she has been allowed the grace to find homes for the other horses. Or perhaps the charity is at full stretch and has taken a chance on allowing this lady to find homes first before they offer to take them in for rehoming. We will probably never know.
However for me personally the facts are simple and there for all to see. Regardless of personal circumstances and finances this woman was in charge of those horses and as such had a duty of care to all those animals. Allowing any horse to starve like that is just not on in my view and especially when there was a young and growing foal in the paddock/field as well as a pregnant mare.
As I said above, if this lady needed help in any shape or form it was and is available so why not ASK for it instead of letting the animals suffer like that.
In my opinion the sentence was too lenient. People need to be made an example of because if they are not what kind of message are we sending out worldwide about the standard of equine welfare in this country?
Tougher sentences along with education, licensing and so on is the way to progress.
If someone were to to be convicted of a drink and drive offence then some courts will allow the defendant the option of paying for and taking part in an alcohol education course. Completion of the course can lead to a reduction in the length of their driving ban. I know this not from experience but during the time I spent court reporting as part of my journalism degree.
Why then could we not have a system in which instead of the defendant -in the case of neglect or abuse of an equine- paying a whole load of fines could instead have to pay part of the costs to attend a course that teaches about equine care and welfare. I am sure there are quite a few courses that would be suitable for this purpose. If the defendant correctly passed the course then they could have the length of their ban, prison sentence, community service etc reduced.
In my opinion this would effectively kill two birds with one stone. Each person who attended the course would obviously be observed by those that were teaching it and could therefore make a pretty good character assessment of that individual into the likelihood of them actually offending again. Also the participant would learn a great deal about equine care and in fact in some cases may actually turn their lives around. In an Utopian existence I suppose some may say that it may give them the chance to ultimately work for equines and in some cases help to teach others about the importance of the correct care of them. Just a thought?

After the ban she is free to do it again. What sentence would you like? What about after the ban?

"You can teach an old dog new tricks" "A leopard never changes its spots" Cant think of anymore lol but anyway i think that guilty of cruelty to any animals should lead to a lifetime ban,yes they all find loopholes of ownership ie asking friends and family to be owners, but with the net closing in on "them" i think that eventually people don't want to "help" out people who have been found guilty of cruelty know that i would never ever help anyone that has been convicted of cruelty..I might be completely wrong here !?!?
