Thinking of buying him - 4yo gelding from Ireland

He is currently 14.3 - do you think he would grow another inch??? I am only 5ft 4. What weight do you think he would carry??

He is nice. He may grow a bit - but looks as though the back end may go up more! Bear in mind that he has fairly good/high withers, so may measure higher than he feels, if you know what I mean. He should easily carry someone 5'3" anyway unless they are very chunky. What would you do with him?

He has a very sweet face

IMHO conformation wise he is very straight in his hinds and looks short in the back, this combined with such a big shoulder as it is may cause saddle fitting problems.

ie look where the saddle should fit BEHIND the shoulder it doesn't give hardly any room for a saddle. Most likely any seller would put a saddle too far forward
so that you may not notice it.

Yes it is likely he will grow another inch or two

Yes, I thought he was very short in the back - needs a good farrier too by the look of it. Currently driven but I want to do a bit of everything with him. Might even make a ridden show cob out of him....

length of back shouldnt be an issue for you- I have a 13.2hh NF 3 year old- just had a saddler out to fit him a saddle and my boy has a huge shoulder (first thing the saddler said) and we found a WH show saddle in 16inch that fit him and my bum- gorgeous King's Saddlery saddle :)

Thanks guys - think I might be getting him shipped over next Friday! 900 euros (£800) + £250 P & P!!

Asked the present owner a bit about his history and was told that he bought him off an old boy who used to ride him down to the shops to do his shopping. He is only just 4, present owner has had him a year!

Have you had him vetted? The bottom has dropped out of the Irish horse market so 800 euros might not be such a bargain with his confirmation

Yes, he needs a good farrier and luckily I use a partner of the 4 x calgary word champion and Chiltern Equine remedial vet. So if he cannot put him straight then I don't believe anyone will.

No idea what he will make eventually but do not think that RC level show cob is out of the question.

He is only 4 so has a LOT of developing to do so expect the finished article to be a long way off. He has a few faults that hopefully will rectify/improve with time but he also has an amazing shoulder, a lot of front end, nice head for a cob, kind eye, good flat bone, more than ample heartroom and nice short cannons....

Will keep you all posted on his development if I decide to go ahead after vetting. Cheers for your input.

tbh i think you had a;ready decided before this post! personally i dont like him much (he has a very pretty head) but he is much too short backed and upright hinds and he does look very low in the heel. Depends on what you want him for but im not sure how succressful he would be to show. Also I would be a little worried that he was ridden at 2 yrs. ultimately the decision is yours, i think there are plenty of nice little cobs over her (uk) cheaper than the 1k its going to cost you. Have you been to visit this horse or do you plan to before purchase? or have him vetted as he could have something wrong with him which might end up costing you more than the euros you paid-yes i am cynical and no i cant spell!

Proceed with caution. I wouldn't buy him based on those photos as he looks very poorly put together. So unless you view him in the flesh to see how accurate or not those photos are - I would not buy. He will also not get any bigger.

Horses of this type are two a penny in the UK.- where you can view, ride and vet.

Make sure you get him vetted as the state of the forefeet could lead to ligament/tendon issues and cause you soundness problems. It's not just a case of getting the feet to look better, you need to take into account the unseen damage such long toes/low heels can cause.
