Kiri has now recognised that she is growing out of Mick's fast and that she will have to move on to something else in the next 12 months and in the meantime we will try to find someone else to take on Mick's (farrier already has a few people in mind).

Now she is dead set on wanting a tb

she is happy with a racer/exracer that has been in training but preferably not raced and is between 15hh and 15.2hh. No younger than 3 but no older than 5. AND with a good temperment. She is fantastic with "problem" and sharp horses and worked wonders on my last exracer whenever I was a wimp (she has a sticky bum and stays perefctly relaxed despite any gymnastics going on underneath her!) so I have no doubts that she'll cope just fine and I've reschooled 2 off the track now too.

So firstly what are the odds of us picking something of the above description up for under 1K?

And she found this chap on horsemart - she loves him (though we are NOT looking properly yet, just getting a feel for things!) Im not so sure and would want to know what he has done so far and why he has done so little and is now 4? Why he was in poor condition and would want a little more detail on the weeving but he could be a genuine bargin and Im just being picky! Also, very hard to see from the pics his conformation etc which doesn't help!

So opinions please

Its got to be big enough to take her leg which is as long as mine and as she likes fine things probably no smaller than 15hh, though if the right horse came up we'd still consider it! And as she is only 13 Im thinking that she won't want any bigger than 15.2hh. Ideally something that she can have indefinately too as it would break her heart to have to say goodbye to another due to size. But I think we'd be flexible - Tilly is just over 16hh and she doesn't look small on her!

Cheers! Would definately look at bloodlines for hereditary traits. Realisticly what are the odds of us finding something that is basically too small/too slow for a small budget? We have Paul Nicholls quite locally and my last exracer came from him and was a total poppet but I had him on loan from the person who brought him and it was 4 or 5 years ago now?

Not to keen on the back legs, look weak and cow hocked but could be the way he is standing.

Glad I wasn't the only one to think that but its so hard to tell from that pic...

There are plenty around the £1k mark if you take the time to look, and strike lucky. You would be better going to a trainer then buying privately from an advert like that. Something about it doesnt quite ring true, 'good home, blah, blah, blah' - then priced rediculously low! A price like that is going to attract the wrong people (no offence) so why do it? Either has 3 legs, is nuts, or both.
Your last ex racer was very lucky to get out of PN's, most of them only go out of there one way. You would be best to ring round smaller trainers.

See that was my gut instinct too but didn't know if it was just me finding fault

[/ QUOTE ] He had tweaked his fetlock - wasn't going to race again but nothing that rest and time wouldn't remedy for a nice little allrounder. His owner worked for paul and when he said he was going to the meat man she said she'd have him for meat money - he gave him to her for nothing!! But he was a treasure - wish I could have brought him when he came on the market just as I started uni

I would not touch it with a bargepole if it is for a 13 year old - because I think that they should be having fun at that age and not taking on problem horses. To me it is a recipe for an accident and confidence knock.

Sorry to not be more positive!

I would def. look for something older and wiser, even if it means waiting and spending a bit more cash.

Tbh its not the cash - Its a very awkward child!!! Thing is, she gets her fun from her achievements - Mickey was rendered "unrideable" and "dangerous" before she came along barely able to trot! But they have had so much fun and learn't so much. We're not big on schooling/competing etc but we have a fantastic time just hacking out, mucking around in the field and seeing little bits of progress.

You're right in that ideally something more "ponyish" would be better but you try telling her that!! Bl**dy child *rolls eyes* Its also why temperment is so important - I wouldn't have a second thought about letting her do things with Tilly because I know my horse and I know my sister and trust them both but I know I will end up losing my horse if Im not careful, lol!

ETS: At kiri's age I took on a very green, very novice tb who had done very little. He hadn't raced, just some very light hacking, and was 16.2hh! He taught me so much and I had some of my best rides on him for a few years. At 16 I got my first proper loan and it was Citti - 5 yr old exracer, straight off the track into a field for 6 months and then to me - I have not 1 regret, we had enormous fun as well as ups and downs but he was a lovely horse with a good nature and imo that is paramount!

He is in poor condition but if conformation is ok hr might be worth taking on, but why is he so cheap does he have vices?, but worth a look if you don't look might miss a huge bargain.
