What do you think of this horse, then?

thanks both.

the lady selling him is a trader (equine-agents) and she is selling him for a client. i've been given the phone number of the actual owner, but no reply at the moment.

Right this is so much more suitable for you than the last one today (although he was lovely). Look at the way he carries, not leaning, pricked ears. Looks a little onward bound jumping but she is riding like AP McCoy so hardly surprising. I'd be on the phone for this.

VERY NICE :D.......my type lol

Get calling.....rider didn't do him any justice mind you...he looks like he has lots to give...

^^^^^^^^^^ This!!

Just the sort of horse I would go for.

Looks like you could have a lot of fun with him and bet he would turn his hoof to most things for you.

A lovely horse that would be great fun. The rider looks like she was having to use a lot of leg. I don't think he rushed his jum, she flapped him all the way, and dropped the contact on takeoff, and he just got on with it. Has a lovely trot too - like a lot of cobs.

Hope you went to see him. Let us know. If he was nearer I'd be ringing myself - just what my friend needs for his son... (Don't worry its 300 miles away!)

He does look a nice type, but buying unseen when you are a nervous rider does worry me... Is there no one nearer to the horse you may know who could go and try it for you???? That's alot of money and heartache if it arrives and isn't quite as laid back or as easy as you need..... You could look up instructors through in that area and see if you paid one would they go and try it for you explaining what it is that you need and want in the horse??????

He does look lovely, and the dealer does have a good reputation. But I really think you should go and have at least 1 viewing..... I think buying unseen is a bit risky....

He reminds me of my girl, and if he is as good as her you will have a blast with never a moment of worry!!
lovely, lovely, lovely x

They have a nice grey 16 hander on their website. If I was nearer I'd be down their trying some horses but Im too far away. As others have said cant you get someone to ride the horse for you rather than buy unseen.

Thanks everyone.
Honey08 - its about 200 miles away for me too. Was thinking of buying him unseen! (gulp)

Given you are a nervous rider wanting a confidence giver you would be utterly stupid to buy unseen.

He looks a nice sort. Get yourself in the car and go and try him.

No personal dealings with this dealer but I have only ever heard good things about how honest they are in their descriptions of their horses. The only thing is you wouldn't be covered by their warranty as it is a private sale. I wouldn't buy unseen although I must say he looks a lovely cob to ride. However that vid and the photos are only a few moments in time. You would be far better off making the trip down to see him if possible or at least get someone you know and whose opinion you trust and who knows how well you ride to go and try him. If you do decide to buy unseen just make sure you get a vetting done first, though I'm sure you already know that bit.

Sorry to be boring but....Caveat Emptor - "Let the Buyer Beware".
You are nervous - this might sound like the ideal horse for you but until YOU have tried it, you won't know! Please be careful.

BTW, I know nothing about the horse, the rider, the owner nor the dealer!

Dear myhorsefred

I can really relate to your situation - after a series of riding accidents I became quite a nervous rider so getting the right horse for me was paramount. I drove literally hundreds and hundreds of miles over 6 months of searching until i found the right horse and I've never regretted a single mile of travel. Nor the fuel costs either, not that I have much money going spare but I knew the cost of fuel would be miniscule compared to the potential losses involved if I bought the wrong horse.

PLEASE jump in your car and go see this boy. Get up early, take a friend, lots of coffee, a picnic, wine gums - whatever is your vice to keep you awake and cheerful - and just drive.

I spoke to many sellers and by the end had got the hang of it e.g. certain comments would make me know I just needed to end the conversation. What feels safe to someone may not feel so to you and vice versa - you need to feel the "vibe" (ok, terrible word, I'm sorry but "energy" would make more eyes roll I'm sure) and meet the horse face to face. Because it isn't just about the ridden work. I don't know if you are the same as me but when I lost my confidence I was just as bad on the ground, so anything that was a piss taker would have been disasterous. For whatever reason, you can just feel safe on and around some horses and not others, and as a nervous rider this is hugely important.

After my accident the first horse I bought (and still have) was a 17.2 warmblood who would go sideways down the road if he felt like it - but for whatever reason I always felt safe as houses on him and he gave me all my confidence back and we ended up doing things that I never thought I would again - such as XC. People would see me out of this giant strong horse and look in disbelief when I said he was my confidence giving ride. But from the moment I met him I knew I could trust him with my life and he has never ever once let me down. I could not have gained this iknowledge or insight from a telephone conversation or advert - because horses are different with different people.

Its also really important to have a sit on him because even if you feel safe you might not like his paces, he might feel too wide - who knows, only riding him will tell.

I hate "preaching" posts but with us unconfident types I think its more easy to get it wrong. I hope this makes sense. Please go on a road trip - and let us know how it goes. Best of luck with your search XX

He looks really lovely, but as others have said you should go see him and make sure you feel comfortable and safe on him.

Also, you must speak to the owner directly and get direct answers to all your questions relating to behaviour, temperament and health as the dealer is only selling as an agent and you won't have any come-back to her (ideally talk to the owner in person in the presence of a witness).

Now that's more like it.

If it were near me - I'd be snatchnig it from under your nose.

It looks like a really great sort. Love it.

As finnywinny said, not every horse rides the same for every rider. I know I said he is the double of mine and is lovely, but I still wouldn't buy without trying.
I drove for three hours to see my girl and it was worth every drop of diesel.
I know two people who tried my horse out before me, both of them found her far too forward going and very spooky....I find she needs just the right amount of leg and she can look at things but never sharp. Don't buy before you try, just to high a risk.
