What do you think of this horse?

mg: he's gorgeous!

how semi experienced??

they've been honest about him needing a firm rider to hack him out, be careful you are experienced enough for him or you wont do each other any favours, he may change for the worse, racehorses are a clever bunch! (not that normal horses arnt!

IMO I personally wouldn't go for a pure TB but that is just my opinion. The adverts states he can be quite spooky out hacking, so would you be happy with that? if you really like the sound of him then it is definately worth a look. Good luck. let us know how you get on

Well I did most of my growing up around P2Pers and rode them whilst they were in training (in the loosest terms I might add as they werent serious top notch I dont think!)
I currently have a 16.2hh warmblood type who when we started out wsnt keen on hacking alone etc and I perservered with him and now he's excellent, but I know there's naughty and there's naughty!!
I am ideally looking for a horse to start doing some proper jumping on as my horse is great but not quite up to it! I need something with a little more Omph as my horse is so laid back he's almost horizontal.
But I agree I, like others am wary because he might be TOO nervy etc for me, its hard to know I guess until I go and see him.
But kinda worry I might be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, if thats the right saying!!

I would go for something older and been there done that - you should be able to get something for the same price if you dont mind the age. He is a gorgeous horse but the hacking thing would worry me (my horse is spooky and can be annoying when you just fancy a ride out!!)Also you may have this issue when you go to sell him on.. I wouldnt make allowances for the spookiness you are purchasing at a great time of year so should be able to find something better. Its only my opnion so good luck with whatever you decide!

Probably worth a look but bear in mind that insurance will most likely exclude his tendons due to the firing and that he may well have an old tendon injury.

he sounds a lovely sort, although i'd be concerned about how sppoky he is out hacking.

Can sympathise with the 'so laid back he's horizontal' feeling, I have one of those too, but mine is for jumping, he's laid back enough to stay calm and do whatever daft thing I ask of him

I think he sounds lovely and definatly worth a look. Just make sure you hack him when you try him out to make sure you are happy with him.

And do check where that scar is on his leg, some injuries have a tendancy to come back.

Not sure he is going to suit you as there is no mention that he has ever done much jumping in a competition, I would be careful about that and the spooking needs checking well. Give him a good try and not just at their place ask to see him at a show even though it will be indoors now

Sometimes the ex hurdlers have got into the habit of going full pelt at jumps, so it might be worth asking if you can pop him over a couple of schooling fences to see how he reacts.
Agree with the others that you should try him out hacking, but I'm sure that would be your intention anyway.
Check out the scar obviously, and also be aware that having been fired, most insurance companies would place an exclusion on his legs. Just something to bear in mind.

Have to say that he is simply stunning.

He does look an attractive sort - but most horses do stood posing in their field! I like that they've been honest in the advert but perhaps ask for some action pics or a video first ??
I agree that if you want something to do more jumping he might not suit you...just be wary and like Carthorse said, read between the lines

Personaly I dont think he is right for you. The ad states he is dodgy to hack and it also says he may make a RC allrounder....he isnt yet.

You will have your work cut out and there is nothing to say you will be able to improve the hacking OR turn him into a RC horse.

Id look at something thats already doing what you want to do.

I know this horse from another forum where the owner is a member - personally I'd say go for it! Owner was a bit too novicy for him and AFAIK the hacking prob is that he can be a bit spooky, nothing more and nothing serious.

PM me if you want...

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I would like to think I am an experienced enough rider to handle most problems whilst out hacking, spookyness isnt a problem, as Im a firm believer in practise makes perfect and I have a batallion of experienced nanny horses on the yard who Im able to hack out with if needed.

I agree that the main thing I can do is go and try him, I might take the weekend to hack him out and try him jumping etc.

Good idea to see him hacked out alone first, I can follow along in the car.

Does anyone think it would be a good idea to see him at speed (at least canter) to see that he can infact be stopped etc?

Hi Tilly

This is my horse! Please ask any questions you like, my email address is linked on the add.

My reason for selling is not because I am "too novicy" for him. I bought him off the track to reschool, I have done it and he is now for sale 18 months later.

He's a great horse but if your nervy in any way he will take advantage.

Personally I wouldn't touch an ex-racer that has had its tendons fired.

Why not? I know of a few that have and they are fab horses.

ETA I think he looks lovely, there is no harm in going to see him and see what you think in the flesh. I've got my first ex-racer and I love her to pieces, she's fab
