a friend has asked me if I would go and see this mare which is for sale. The mare is a 5 year old, her breeding is on the link and the seller has been very honest. The mare was destined for SJing but has been diagnosed as being a shiverer and owner wants to get rid of to make way for another horse. Price is 1,000 euros with all vac/docs up to date.'not very much' and would probably do some school work and hacking. I personally wouldnt buy a horse with such a problem and looking at the pics, her hind legs look very odd to me. What do you think re buying such a horse and her hind legs/hocks, do they look very odd to you? Would like to put her off as Treviso is an awful long way away to look at a dodgy horse

she is very pretty. Seems to me to be holding herself which is making her look wierd. Could be do do with her condition? You would be buying into a problem, for example, may be unable to shoe her behind.

Noooooooo don't go. Don't buy her, the back legs are AWFUL! For a start, shiverer aside, they are far too long - MUCH longer than her front legs. I wouldn't touch a shiverer, it's a degenerative disease of the spinal cord and if it goes like my friend's horse, it gets progressively worse until the horse is dangerous to ride and then unfair to keep alive. Tell her to think of the heartbreak of having to have her put down!

Very odd - she has no second thigh and is very sickle hocked. Don't know anything about shivers so can't advise on that. If your friend is interested I would advise getting a veterinary opinion before committing to purchase.

It says that the mare passed the coggins test, what is that I've never heard of it, the seller also says the mare has problems stepping backwards asa result of the shivers which came to light from a vet check.. Can you tell I've got google translate on it translated the whole thing

Legs look seriuosly weird, even a non horsey person could tell theres something wrong there....steer well clear.
Or if you do buy watch out that the person riding behind you doesn't get poked in the eye by her hock :P

wow - seriously weird hocks!

(and thats from a rubbish horse buyer! lol)......gorgeous face though

I'd steer clear of knowingly buying a horse with serious problems like that - too much heartbreak and financial burden!...there are plenty of other horses out there

A 'coggins' test is the law here in Italy and is done yearly or every 2 years depending on the region your horse lives in. The Local health vet takes a blood sample from every horse on the yard and has it analysed for Equine Infectious Anaemia. This disease is passed via bitting insects, dirty needles and they have discovered via droplet although this is rare.
heres a link that explains all about this horrible illness.

Thanks for all your replies. I have convinced friend that she would be better off digging a hole and chucking her money into it

. I think she has cottoned on that a pretty head doesnt automatically mean that what follows it is the same. Im sure someone will buy her and breed from her-its the 'done thing' here in Italy. If its got ovaries and four legs then its got to be hot

Off to have a hunt around for something a bit healthier for her. Will be asking for your advice again!
