What do you think of this saddle?

Lippyx, They do have a returns policy though and at that price assuming it was a close enough fit I would be happy to get a saddler out to have a tweak.

Girlracer, No I havent, are they similar?

I'm a synthetic saddle snob I'm afraid!! I only use Thorowgood, anything else is like sitting on a plank of wood and if it's uncomfortable for me then it's uncomfortable for the horse. I'd try to find a good 2nd hand Thorowgood or Wintec if I were you rather than risk a cheaper version.

I was going to get one for my youngster to start him off. It says that the saddle adjust to the horses shape. I havent seen one close up but shires is ok make. Its ok to start off with

I sell these, they are made in India and don't fit most horses as suggested by the seller.
It's not just the width that determines if it will fit the horse's wither but the shape of the head is just as important. How often have you seen saddles that are say a wide fit and your horse is a wide fit, you try it on but it still isn't right?
Cut back heads, which this saddle has, are designed for a higher wither so having a cut back head saddle on a flat cob even adjusted to the widest fitting won't always work!
Get a saddler to fit your saddle, they can advise you about this, Oz :)

Thanks for the replies guys,

Unicornleather, it would be for a 14.2 dales, I'm not sure what the withers would be like. Its for my soon to be loan who comes with no tack, I dont have loads of money so would be needing something in this price range, up to £200 max.

i looked in to these saddles and have to say i dcecided against it. i might get shot here but here goes.

i spoke to sonmeone who sells these on ebay and was told a saddle fitter would say it doesnt fit as only changes shape when you get on!

plus if it changes shape when ridden can it no change in different gaits? eg trot ect?
im a saddle fitters dream i know bugger all so decided to pay 150 for a second hand wintec instead so atleast if i get it wrong it will be easier to sell on

I got mine of preloved

Sometimes it's false economy to buy cheaper as in the long run it can cause more problems for the horse and your wallet.
I have these saddles on sale but to be honest I don't like them that much, I get asked if I have them, so offer them.I haven't sold any of the adjusting types yet which doesn't surprise me!
I prefer quality saddles but I know not many people have the necessary money to buy them.
Personally, I would look at a GOOD quality secondhand saddle fitted by a saddler.
How old is the horse it is going on?
How much work is the horse in at the moment and how much work and what type do you intend to do?
Also the saddle would not only have to fit the horse, it needs to be fitted to you.
All new saddles (flocked) will come under flocked, this enables us to fit and flock the saddle on site at the time of fitting and sale, so if you bought a brand new one it would need flocking up anyway, if it isn't is soon sinks down onto the horse.
Oz :)

Hi Oz :)

The horse is 7 yrs old and he is in moderate schooling a couple of times a week and showing (he's a little porky tbh) when/if he comes to me he will be hacked a few times a week.

Could I phone a saddler and tell him what my budget is for a second hand saddle? Or does he come out and try to get you to buy the most expensive saddle he's got and then put fitting on the top?

Thanks

Hi, where abouts are you? I know a lady who sells and buys saddles and you can take your horse up there to fit it, or take 5 home and get someone to fit one and take the rest back! They are also some very cheap ones, I bought a leather one for £150, had it for two years and then sold it her back for £100 and then bought a new one when we had a bit bigger budget! :)

I'm up in the north east DanniiHignett, that sound like a really good way to do it!

Aah, I'm in Shropshire  maybe look for someone similar near you?
I also forgot to say, I wouldn't go anywhere near those saddles! Like someone said, it's like riding on wood! Plus on eBay you never know exactly what your getting, I've bought a saddle from there before, took 3 weeks to get here, we took all the measurements from the seller, exact size of the other saddle and it still didn't fit. Luckily we sold it again :)

a saddle fitter would usually see the saddle ridden in before saying it doesn't fit (unless it's VERY obvious that asking them to ride would cause discomfort).

OP- i'm afraid i don't like the sound of the 'self adjusting'... it is a saddle, it doesn't have a brain, how does it know to adjust?! i didn't read the ad properly, but it think it said something about hinges... and i'm afraid a hinge would cause a pressure point... something you should be trying to avoid.

i second whoever it was that says find a fitter with second hand tack, there are a fair few of them around the UK, and a second hand quality saddle, properly fitted, is better than buying something that could cause problems.

good luck in your search! xx

Thanks Danni, think I'll be avoiding ebay :D

Bowen4horses, yes it has hinges! The more I think about it the more I'm actually starting to dislike it. Thank you everyone for stopping me making a very bad decision!

Ive never had to buy tack before, all my other loans have come with full tack but this one will only be coming with a bridle and a rug!

Id definately try finding a saddler in your area, tell him your budget before he comes and and take it from there.
Self adjusting saddles bought and used by ppl who know little about saddle fitting can do a lot of damage to the horses back.

Hello , It is a nice saddle and nice to ride in, but any fast work like canter and jumping and i found it would lift off the back and throw me forward.. I ended up geting a wintec and omg if was loads better. I would say dont get it as i resold it at less then i paid for it. Nice saddle for show anyways not to ride in..

Good decision not to buy one of these OP, if they were the miracle the seller makes them out to be they'd cost thousands of pounds, not just over £100!

I'd call a saddler or visit a tackshop who sells 2nd hand saddles in your area to see what prices they are and go from there. Some things you can scrimp on but not something as precious as your horses back.

Good luck in finding the right one soon.

Yup!! I had another look at the ebay listing and noticed 231 saddles already sold!!

Best to ring up your local saddlers and tell them your budget and see if they can help you out.
