What are people's opinions on Welsh Section D horses and ponies? I have always thought they were really pretty and good riding ponies? I know they can be a bit cheeky sometimes, but just wondered on opinions for a first horse? (I am not a novice)

i used to ride a welsh d who was a stallion till he was 9 and i rode him when he was 12. he was very cheeky but had only been drien for a number of years, he was very lazy but would buck all the time! i had lots of fun on him tho!

Hardy horses with severely over-developed sense of humour. Only horses known to make holes in the ice on top of winter water buckets. Can live on air but prefer food, in quantity.

ive got one - they are lovely - can be strong and quirky somethimes depending on how they have been bought up - but good fun - i would have another one next time!

PMSL how true. I LOVE Welshies although we do have one who disgraced himself at Pony Club camp by having to be rugged up in mid-summer when the temperature dropped by 10 degrees. All the other ,mostly more exotic, horses and ponies managed fine - but he just stood and shivered and looked thoroughly miserable until his stable rugs were brought over for him.

Talented but very opinionated and strong willed. Not for the faint hearted. They can be infuruating one day and superstars the next!

My lad is irish draught cross welsh sec D.He has the most comfy canter but his trot is very bouncy due to his high (ish) knee action. He is a dope on a rope but cheeky with it!.

MOST of the ones I've come across have had a sharp side and a bit of attitude..enough to put me off anyway.

I had a D mare many moons ago and it was a constant battle of wills, bless her. She would show me up in public at every opportunity!!

Fine horse across country though...but boy could she buck!!

I've known and ridden a couple of welsh D's, one was a bit offy but the other wasa total saint who was regularly ridden by a disabled lad

what some might consider entertaining cheekiness I have always considered to be bolshie rudeness..so I wouldn't want one..but I know I am in a minority

You get good and bad in every breed type. Welsh Ds are moorland ponies and are usually good doers, hardy, strong bone, can live out all year round, hardy feet so can be barefoot, and generally good alrounders. I have 4 welsh C because I like good stronge bone and are cheap to keep yet strong enough to take my weight (adult).
I would'nt want to have a TB as I dont have stables only a barn for emergencies and they can be lively if you dont ride reguelly. Depends on what facilities you have. There are some top dressage superstars welsh D doing JA jumping to Dressage. Go for it...... good luck

I used to have a welsh D mare, she was stroppy, stubborn, moody and could be a downright idiot to ride, yet on the ground she was the sweetest horse.

Too clever for their own good these horses and they can be quick to play on any weaknesses.
I wouldnt recommend them as a first horse.

Some are lovely and quiet and saints, as with any breed, but as a general rule of thumb I would say they need an experienced owner who wnt take any crap.

Oh don't get me wrong..I'm all for low maintenance nags hence why all mine are natives. My mare even may have some welsh D in her..not sure..

They are fantastic all round horses.. good doers.. easy off th eleg.. cheeky as hell but completly controlable.. Too clever for there own good and generally gorgeous (and i own a tb)

They are brillient animals which can do well in any sphere.. jumping, dressage and eventing. I known a welsh which is competing PSG easily.

Wouldnt turn one down.

PMSL Totally agree with that!

Brilliant, but you do have to have a sense of humour to match theirs! Great all rounders but not always the easiest horses, if you find one you click with they're the best!

I have only ever met two welsh D's that i actually like, all the rest have been bolshy, ignorant gits (imo) I would never have one.

And totally agree with that too. I would not recommend one as a first horse I don't think unless the person was experienced and capable of arguing back! (even then it's a battle of the wills!)

I used to have one and he was fab. He was really lively but safe and generally really good fun! he could be a little sh*t but he behaved most of the time.

He was a great hunter as well.

They are can be very pretty and talented but like the others they have more attitude than some other breeds!

I think everyone's comments sums them up pretty well.

If you want a horse that will always do exactly as you wish and never make a fool out of you then welshie's probably aren't for you.

If you are prepared to work as a team with a highly intelligent animal with it's own opinion and sense of humour you will end up with an animal that will go to the ends of the earth for you.

They are great ponies with great ability but have a bolshy, pig headed, stubborn streak. They are good doers, hardy types, who acn carry decent weight. They are good alrounders and are very talented.

I wouldnt recommend buying a Welsh D for a novice rider or for most children as they can be too much but then there are the ones who would fit the bill perfect.

I personally love them! I have a Welsh D x TB who is lovely (in my biased opinion

). They make fun talented allrounders and they are easy to look after in that they are usually hardy good doers.

However, most Welsh D's I have known have had quirky personalities; very clever, opinionated and strong-willed and have a good sense of humour. They take a long time to mature and can be sharp to ride and handle.

Obviously there are exceptions but I wouldn't recommend them as a first horse unless you are quite experienced and you need to be firm with them or they will take the p*ss.

I had one who was sadly PTS last year - we were schooling medium dressage at home and could have gone further, however he was sharp and far too clever for his own good. He would carry a 2 year old child without any problems but could embarass my FBHS instructor...

I found him more work than my current TB's, however we had a bond like no other and I miss him all the time, there was nothing like that trot!

Great ponies but can cause lots of probs in wrong or inexperienced hands.....
