Horsey that is. She is 2.5 years old. And ever since I have had her aged 9 months she gets herself cast. But people have seen her. She doesn't panic at all, she rocks here self back and forth and get up no problems at all. It is though she does it on purpose!!!

Anyway the other night her shavings bed complete with all bankings was at the front of her stable and she had a couple of grazes above her eye, no blood just grazes. Been to the loo okay but not eaten all her haylage which is not like her. So i suspected slight colic.

Anyway got there this morning. Bed at the front. Grazes on both sides of her face about eyes, graze on hock and on point of both hips. But her rug was completely off and mashed in the middle of her bed with one of the surcingle straps snapped off.

I have two ideas. Lying down and got her hind leg in the surcingle and thrashed about to get up, hence the injuries and the snap to the strap. But there is no grazing around her fetlocks or pasterns to suggest her hind leg was stuck.

Or. Mild colic again. Maybe she got the rug over her head and cos she couldn't see hence the panicking.

There are no scuff marks on the walls to see as she has no shoes on.

I have left her tonight without a rug but it is going to be cold.

Not sure what to do for the best or work out how she could have done the injuries.

Poos in the stable so not bunged up and all haylage been eaten.

Any ideas and well done for getting this far..........

Do you think she may have been too hot, it has been very mild. My boy was sweating in a lightweight rug so hes gone naked again. Just thinking maybe shes rolling arround to try to remove it. I suppose you will find out tomorrow if that is the case.
I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Sleep outside or CCTV. I'm a worry worm.

I'd worry. Friend had a late gelded boy who had to spend far, far too long stabled. I think he couldn't cope with the stress and got cast a lot. I think he had a low grade bellyache even then. Few weeks of this and boom, major colic attack. Boxed to hospital, twisted gut, didn't survive the surgery (2 lots). If your horse is thrashing about, there could be loads of easy reasons but I'd still be aware of the less nice ones and watch her attitude, demeanour, feed and water intake, sweating, temperature, gut sounds, staling and pooing. Better to be safe than sorry. Have you asked the vet to come and give her the once over?

i'd have her blood tested immediately for tapeworm. if she's routinely thrashing around like that and getting cast, i'd be very worried... it just isn't normal at all. i'd suspect worms.
i think i'd keep her out too, or in a much bigger stable or barn, if at all possible. and an anti-cast roller isn't a bad idea at all, even if it is just to see whether it makes a difference.
btw, i've just remembered, i've got one to sell, hardly used...

I agree with K, this sounds like worms migrating through the gut wall or lumen and it's probably jolly uncomfortable.
Don't forget you need a blood test to check for tapeworm.
I would put big banks up and possibly stay up one night to see what she's doing.
I wouldn't leave her on her own another night without finding the cause.

agree with hh. even if you put a baby listening device in her stable and the receiver in the tackroom, and doze in there until she kicks off. i would definitely want to know what's going on, both in her stable and in her tummy.

I completely understand what you are going through. . .

My horse used to this if he heard any sort of noise that disturbed him, horses coming in or getting fed he would roll and roll until cast even kids playing football outside or dogs barking. He often couldn’t get back up and would be stuck, u would find him the same as ur girl with grazes all down side of face were he had been trying to get up. He is a big lad and it took three or so of us to get him up, even once the gardener found him once and yard owners husband they tied ropes around tail to get him out thought doing a favour. He always took colic after, I went down the line of anti cast rollers (he has to big withers so made little difference) big bankings (I found harder for him to get out with these plus shavings would end up in a mound and get him stuck worse). I also got a worm count for suspected tape worm like u guys my vet recommended and everything came back clear, tried calmers everything and anything people suggested. Until one day I had reached the end of my tether iv had enough of this I just turned him out and since then he has lived out with no problem. As much hay in the winter and good rugs on he has been fine much more laid back and not doing himself any damage. I think he just found it to stressful being kept in. I have since moved him to a place down the road with one other person, all horse come in together and it is only me and one lady and he now comes in happily every night. He still gets stressed if his routine is disturbed and starts rolling but nothing like before, touch wood!

Thanks folks. Now I am really worried. She was fine this morning. No more grazes and bed in the same place and all food gone. She had laid down you could see the flat bit of shavings. She is her normal self. We follow a regular worming programme as advised by vets and she is uptodate and not yet due. She has only ever done this to this extent twice since I have had her in 18 months. But getting cast is regular. Even with big shavings bankings. I heard anti cast rollers can do more harm than good if they do roll on them with back probs etc. Am I wrong? PM how much you would like to sell it for. Thanks
