We've been to see this horse today as a potencial summer project.
I'm going halves with a friend, so need to take in to account their opinion. The horse was lovely, very green and quite nervous but really lovely type, and seemed really genuine.
The thing was, he had a small lump under his belly near his sheath, which we suspect to be a hernia. however it seemed quite small and mostly hair. But I stupidly didn't feel it so don't know for sure! you can just see it on the picture....do you think this would affect the horse, and would it put you off?
The person i'm going halves with really seems to have blown it out of proportion, as i don't think it will really greatly affect the horse?

What do you guys think?

oooh i like him! :D re. the hernia i don't really know much about them...perhaps ask your vet? even tho he's a cheapy project i'd still think about having at least a 2 stage vetting anyway so you could ask then?

If it's a hernia (which it looks like it probably is from the photo) then there is no problem. He looks a very useful sort.

A project to sell? I'd certainly get a vets opinion on the lump. Last thing you need is to bring it on and then have a problem selling on if a vet won't pass it in a vetting.

It is most probably an umbilical hernia. When I was observing 5 stage vettings for work exp there were two of them. The vet passed both horses but just let the purchasers know that they were there........my understanding is that they are purely cosmetic and cause no problems.

Ahhh thank you everyone thats exactly what i wanted to hear!!
I think what we're going to do is look into it further and just keep an open mind and not rush into anything.
He is a lovely sort, so hopefully a nice prospect........fingers crossed eh!

It probably is an umbilical hernis and no problem -
BUT I had a pony once with a similar lump - a bit further forward though.
He had had colic surgery, and the hernia was where the stitches had burst while healing.
It didn't cause any problems, and pony lived to be 30 yrs, but when I bought him I was told to keep an eye on it as it potentially could have stretched/burst.
Worth asking the question re colic surgery maybe.

He looks very sweet and love his colouring, but (this will sound odd!) do his head and neck look like they belong to a smaller horse?! Like they're perched on the shoulder. Maybe the photo's at a slight angle...

Can't help on the hernia I'm afraid but looks like others have good advice on that :)

As it is grey there is a chance it could be a Melonama. Have a feel under his tail and see if he has any more lumps there.

As you are buying to sell you have to get it vetted. The person you are selling it to will get it vetted.

Think a vetting is good as like others have said buyer at the other end is likely to want hm vetted. If he is def a project you don't want to end up stuck with him. Could ask vet to look at the lump 1st and not proceed with rest of vetting if he thinks its dodgy! I did something similar once and only got charged for call out and basic examintaion ie not full vetting fee (ie in that case there was a problem!).
PS he's a sweetie!!!
