What do you think to this shetland colt?

Just wondering what others thought to the website 'dragon driving' and the animals advertised on it. I always want to rescue at least half of them.

I dont have any experience with shetland foals... but he doesnt look right at all to me, his legs look deformed almost(or do shetlands legs look that way until they are fully grown, he is only 6 months), especially his white hind looks like his fetlock is deformed in one of the pictures. His feet...

Im not wondering whether he would be okay to breed from, but from a health point of view. Why do you think he is £25 whilst another from the same seller is £120 (the £120 is a filly and her legs look chunkier but would that add that much?)

If you want a field ornament that you are going to geld then he will do the job. If you want him to do anything else then steer well clear. His back legs are wrong but that's the way mini's re tending to go these days.

He is much cheaper than the filly because colts aren't worth anything. They are ten a penny. Fillies have always been worth more - less hassle to keep and no cost of gelding. He also isn't registered and it appears that if you want him so and thus get a passport you have to pay which is totally wrong! The breeder is resposible for registerig the pony and naming it. The only slight upside to paying it yourself is you will get to chose their official name after the prefix.

Not a great deal, sadly - back legs might come right, but hopefully someone will rescue him - should not have been bred in the first place really.......

Every time someone posts a link to dragon driving I always look out of curiosity but every time without fail the poor things on there makes me want to cry. £25 is ridiculous.

Im currently unemployed so unless I become employed whilst he is still for sale I obviously wont be purchasing him, if it happens though *fingers crossed* I am seriously considering it. Really drawn to him, looks like he needs cheering up :(

Yes he would be being bought as a pet/companion, if his legs miraculously evened out it would be nice if my future niece/nephew could sit on him or drive him, but his legs look so fragile I wouldnt think about doing anything like that unless the vet gave him the all go.

£25 colt or not though is very cheap isnt it? I havn't ever seen other colts going for that price, only heard of them going that cheap in Ireland at auction or straight off the new forest and even then they are usually around £40-50 it seems.

Oh thats what I was looking at to rescue him, not wanting him to breed from. If he turn out totally different and could be in hand shown I would interested in giving that a go but wouldnt be bothered if I couldnt.

I really hope I get a job before he is sold, just looks so vunerable poor thing

Exactly, I dont ever look on dragon driving and think im going to find a bargain, its more a case of who looks like they need rescuing the most.

Have you seen the dogs for sale? they look no better than the horses and ponies. And the prices, people wanting £300-500 for cross breeds that are not registered with anything. I worry that alot of them could be stolen also.

Is it better to totally ignore the site though or to rescue one if you can do

I do think though that sometimes people play on other's heart strings on the DD site though

If there is something wrong with its legs (and I dont know wnough about Shetlands to comment) then bear in mind it could cost you money in the future

I'm not aloud to look on DD anymore because one Saturday morning was having a look and saw a poor little colt I called the guy, pony was with me by 3pm, god I was in trouble with family lol but what could they do he was home :D now he is well loved by all and great company for my big guy, colt is now gelding.

I bought my Shetland from dragon driving but to be fair he came from a nice home and was well looked after. Hes a superstar.

I would be a little worried about the legs but if you want him as a companion they might be ok. It's always a risk . But the more we buy that we feel sorry for the more they will breed

Oh yes certainly does play on the heart strings but whether they do it on purpose or not im not sure.

There is a section B type mare on there at the moment with a foal at foot, totally flabbergasted by the image. I thought the foal must be quite old as it looks gigantic to me in comparision to the mare(I dont have much experience with foals) but then it says its 8 WEEKS OLD i really hope thats not true.
If that wasnt bad enough there is a a child sat on the mare and the foal is trying to drink from the mare whilst the child is sat on it :(

Thanks, I would always take that into consideration if buying a horse/pony that looked like it had problems.
I've known people nearly spend thousands of pounds on a horse or pony to get them vet checked and even though they appeared healthy they have had some serious problems going on the inside or have died a couple of weeks after getting them.
One pony somebody I know had on trial, got him vet checked whilst on trial even though it wasnt within the trial contract, turns out the seller had fail to tell them that he had some serious genetic or blood disorder( cannot remember which one) that basically would mean he had to be on permanent medication and could drop down at any minute.

Thats great :) I do love Shetlands. Do you have any photos?

Its difficult though to try and choose who should live and die when the animals are not the ones who have done anything wrong.
I think if breeding laws where much stricter for all animals the world would be a better place.

Its actually over priced.....
If it went to the sales it would be lucky if it raised £5.....and I am being totally serious. Give it another week and it will be "free to good home".
Far better if someone did the decent thing by the poor chap.

:(

What do you mean 'did the decent thing by the poor chap' ?

As a mini breeder, I can assure you that 'back legs wrong' is NOT the way minis are tending to go these days - only minis bred indiscriminately or without care. There are many fantastic minis out there, bred by responsible breeders, which have fabulous conformation.

It's hard to be sure what is going on with this little chaps legs. The angle isn't great, and he is very hairy. It may be that he has poor hind leg conformation, it may also be that he has dropped heels - I've seen this is some youngstock - they are back on their heels at birth, and gradually come up - it can take some time.

Just bear in mind that all the time people 'rescue' ponies which are indiscriminately bred, the indiscriminate breeder will keep breeding substandard stock, as there is a demand for them. If people didn't buy from them, they wouldn't breed. And each time you buy a poorly bred animal, you aren't supporting the breeders who put time & care & money into breeding great ponies. Just a thought.

He shouldn't be standing base wide in front and his back near side fetlock looks collapsed. I'm no breeder or confo person but I wouldn't breed from him but he does look sweet.
ps. The hooves may be the reason he is standing base wide... they look very contracted to me.
