Came accross this video-

And got me thinking.... what do you do when you fall off? Hold onto the reins or let go?

It really looks like it hurts the poor horse when the rider hangs on for dear life using the reins but i guess if your horse normally runs away then its the best thing to do?

I dunnoooo...
 
i do watever happens!

I have to be honest and say I dont generally think about what I do, it just happens, biggest aim is for a) me not to get hurt and b) once I find I am ok, ensure I keep the horse calm as possible (and preferably not have it run off!)
 
O and also see how many somersaults I can do in the air beforeI hit the floor

Let go if you hold your horse you will get more hert and what ever you do dont pull on the horses mouth after it has thrown you off as the horse might off been scared..!!
 
however the behaviour of the child on teh chestnut about halfway throug hthat video, is dreadful!!! if a horse spooks at a hence, or refuses, surely getting that mad and upsetting it that badly, is the worst thing to do!?!! brat

I always let go and try and role away but i normally come out of the side door so that is a little easier.
 
2 and a half (maybe 3 if you being generous) off an 18hher! which jumped and did a fly buck at the same time (being a shire, this was relatively impressive and absolutaly terrifying for me! mum didnt get a picture either as she was jumping up to come make sure I was ok! which i was!)

stop drop and rooolllllllll

and avoid the dinner plate size feet coming down with you!
 
I can hear my PC Instructor yelling at me still "Do NOT let go of that pony!"

Not intending to let go is totally ingrained, doing it is another matter.

The last twice I can recall falling off I was face down in slurry filled tracks and my horse was hightailing it off in the other direction with half a field of hunt followers hot in pursuit, the other half were falling off wetting themselves and trying to look concerned (and failing miserably)

I tend to just do what my instinct tells me to do, the last few times i've fallen off were because my horse jumped a jump then dropped his shoulder the other side and i've kept hold of him cos he's just stood looking at me like oops. i know someone who fell off couple weeks ago cos of a difference in directional opinion, she kept hold of horse and ran beside, he panicked knocked her over and she broke her arm and shoulder, if she'd let go she would have been fine

It is VERY hard to keep a straight face when someone else is rolling around in slurry and swearing fit to bust a gut isn't it? I miss hunting SO much

For some reason I always grab the saddle or stirrup leather in a desperate attempt to either stay on board or stop the horse running off! I suppose it's better than yanking his teeth out, but one of these days I'll break the saddle and then I will not be popular with my RI...
