I am looking for a bombproof, good all rounder weight carrier, for myself and my husband. I have pointed out my weight of around 17st to the owner and she says he could carry me al day. SHM010GDBH1034 .so.... what do you think?

That works :)

He looks very nice. Would the dealer let you talk direct to the riding school he has worked in, so that you can have a chat about how bombproof he is?

I actually think he looks a decent middleweight. If he sounds like what you are looking for I'd say he's worth a look and a test drive - you'll soon feel if he's struggling but if he's fit (as they say hunted all winter) I would guess he'd be fine. :)

yeah, I think so, she seems a really honest dealer, froma rescue centre. She had another one we were thinking about, but she mailed me and said he may be a bit much for us hacking out, but this one would be well suited. My only concern is has he got enough bone for me, but I guess until we get there we wont know!

Saw one that looks a cracker on horsequest and thought of you Benson. Have a look under hacking horses and not too far down there is a cob with the word Nanny in the heading. Loved the advert! Please have a look!

Sorry can't post a link

There's some kind of calculation about the amount of bone and how much they can carry. Have you tried working the calculation backwards to see how much bone you need for 17 stone? Then you could either measure the horse yourself when you get there or ask the owner to measure.

I would be a little sceptical as it is a dealer who I believe has a good turnover of horses mostly coming from Ireland and I am not sure she would have had the horse that long to know that much about him and whether he could take 17 stone all day - not sure how much to trust a dealer myself. YOu can but go and try him - several times in different scenarios - and take someone else with you, plus a video camera, and see how he feels and how he carries you - and then have him vetted. He seems a nice sort from the photos and reasonably priced. I think the best advice given is to try and contact the riding school.

Anyone know the calculations?

Have had a look, not sure a 15,1hh would be tall enough, and I dont like the idea that you cant actually see the horse as its covered in a rug!

Again he looks a nice sort, but at 15hh and me being a 5ft8 larger person, just think he would unfortunately be too small

Benson - don't forget that a horse will soon muscle up to the weight it has to carry if you build it up slowly.

That does look like a nice type, not much description but definitely worth a look. Good luck and keep us updated :)

Have you considered looking at full Irish Draughts?

I have but number one cant find many, and number 2, we were absolutely screwed by the dealers we bought charlie fromin September, so are very restricted with what we can spend as already spent almost £3k on Charlie in Sept, finances are restricted!

Please don't take offence at this but after what you have been through it does seem that you are a bit frantic to find a horse very quickly and getting a bit frustrated about it all. Would it be worth taking a step back, letting things calm down and take the horse hunting a bit more slowly? I am a great believer in fate and quite often the perfect horse just seems to turn up when you weren't looking.

No offence taken at all hun, and I can see what you are saying.I cant ride at the mo anyway, but my husband obviously can. We are both feeling completely lost without a horse, so our plan is that if we can find one now, we can get him home, OH can start riding, lessons etc, so when I can get back on the horse will be hopefully settled in, no spooking in the school etc etc. also, although I say I cant ride, it wont be long til I can start getting a bit more mobile. At the moment my purpose to get up in the morning, is to do the washing up, then its Jeremy Kyle!!! Once we have a horse, it does mean I can catch the bus to the yard, sort out feeds, haynets etc, which will then give me a reason to get out of bed. its been 11 weeks now, I have stopped the scanning of horsemart 12 times a day, so dont feel I am being quite so desperate, and to be honest, this one we are going to see tommorrow has almost come to us! We didnt look for him, my friend who was in the accident with me bought from her, and told her about me, and denzil was just there!

LOL - you are amazing!! I can't believe its been 11 weeks!

Twice now I have lost a horse and a pony in tragic circumstances and I kid you not but each time someone has turned up out of the blue, with a horse/pony loaded up in a trailer, just two days later with a "here have this one to keep you going"!! I am totally with you on getting another as soon as possible as it gives you something to keep you going as you say.

Good luck looking at Denzil (fab name!!) sounds like this one might be worth the trip :) I am glad your friend has found another horse too.

The mare I have now turned up unseen as I was just helping out a friend as she had put her out on loan and it turned out to be a disaster!! Five years later I still have her and the owner gifted her to me for £5 - LOL, beat that one :D

What a hideous picture of the poor mare - you would have thought that if you wanted to get two and half grand for a horse you would have put a bit more thought into its advert!

yeah admit doesnt look greatest pic - but may be worth an email/call to get better pics? sounds like a safe hack

I would also say, regardless of her apparently being a shire, that horse looks too weak in the legs to be a real weight carrier :(

I do not believe this!!!!!! For the 3rd time, we have been pipped at the post. Denzil was sold yesterday!!!!!! The air in my house at the moment is blue!!!!!!!

Hello...It's my day off and I'm bored.....really sorry if you've posted this before but what are the main criteria you're looking for? Do you need it for anything other than hacking, or justs solely a happy hacker saint type?

I'll have a brooowse :)
