What do you think?

We are lucky enough to be able to buy a new horse for our son this year although we will never sell Molly as she is 17 this year and much loved by all of us. Jack wants to event and jump higher than she is happy with so will be looking for a younger horse. However we don't want Molly to grind to a halt as she is very fit and they are doing well together, I am happy to hack but we thought maybe a sharer or loan her to someone in our pony club who is happy to compete at novice level. What are other people's experiences?

well, i've had some experiences with loans and have personally never wanted to get a loaned horse. i think the contract is dodgey that you can get attatched to a horse and then the owner might descide to take the horse back or the terms of loan are crossed when the loaner wants to treat the horse like their own and cant do other things. it's quite a limited idea.

i have also heard a few horror stories of horses going missing when a loaner suddenly descides to take it away as their own and you never see it again. not intending to worry you or anything though!!

people at our yard have a 17 year old that is very fit and competing regularly at around 2.9-3 ft the owners also said they would never dream of selling him even when he is retired.

i completely agree with not selling an old horse if you have no use for it. whether it is fit or sound it is still old and needs to stay in a familiar environment.

could your son compete with both of them. a girl at my yard has three ponies she rides and competes with on a regular basis whatever their level. if one got injured then the other would still be there?

i really do go on and on dont i!!

Yes he could do some smaller stuff with her which would probably be good for his confidence as bonding with a new horse takes time. It's really important that Molly doesn't feel neglected and it would be nice to have some help with two lots of livery payment

My husband retires in a couple of years and we hope to move and have our own land so they can be a couple of old fogeys together!

the old owner of our pony got such a thing about new forests that she's going to get some land, build some stables and make a thing of buying yearlings in the sales and selling them when they have been backed brocken and trained. she got ours from a friend for less than a thousand and sold her for £3000! (that is forgetting the looking after between

)
