I have been looking after a dog for the past 6-7 weeks whilst owner is not in the country. The dog has been licking and biting her feet and legs a lot over the past week and a half. I have tried washing them and putting some cream on but doesn't make much of a difference. The licking and biting has got worse to the point that her back legs are patchy looking and some patches are down to the skin.

I tried contacting the owner's parent who initially did not get back to me. The dog has bitten half her nail off during the process of licking/biting her feet. She must have caught the remaining nail on something coming out of the car tonight as the whole nail is now off and there is a small fleshy looking bit sticking out which looks like the root possibly? It was gushing with blood for five minutes or so, but seems to have calmed down now. She is not limping etc.

I called owner's parent tonight and managed to get a hold of them. They explained that the licking/biting has happened before and that they have tablets in the house for her and some other cream. They said they would bring this down Tuesday/Wednesday next week. In relation to her foot, they thought it might be rash to take her to the vet right now. If it gets any worse I have to let them know, but they won't be able to do anything about it tomorrow as they are not going to be around.

Personally, I think she needs to see a vet re her foot and I think it's a bit unreasonable to make the dog wait until early next week for the medication that she needs for her feet/legs given that it has taken me a week to get a hold of them in the first place. They know I have been trying to get in contact with them and they know that her legs and feet are causing her discomfort.

Just wondered what others thought of this?

I wouldn't be happy for the dog to wait if she is biting her self...it must be driving her bonkers. I would want to get the vet, is their vet near to you and could the owners ask the vet to let you have the necessary meds? they should have sent the meds with the dog as they knew she suffers from this every so often. not good owners IMO.

I would take the dog to the vet ASAP (not emergency call out!) and if necessary foot the bill myself for my own peace of mind... agree with splashgirl's comment, not good owners :(
