What do you tow with or would steer clear of?

Still checking out trailers and vehicles - what do you think is best and what should be avoided! :confused:

I'm working out that I need the lightest trailer for 2x16.2 but need 2L vehicle or more I think?

Would also like to avoid really thirsty trucks as would be used by husband for long runs on motorway.
 
We use a lwb diesel Pajero for towing our Ifor Williams. Does a great job and not too bad on diesel consumption. :)
 
Having just done the what to buy to tow with question - I have just bought a Jeep Cherokee 2.8CRD.

Ok the mpg is not huge ( 25 - 30 depending on who you talk to) but is recommended to tow up to 3500kg.

My OH thought is was a bit OTT until I brought home the 'Fit to Tow' leaflet from the BHS stand at the Herts County Show - and what does it show towing a trailer but a Jeep Cherokee (same colour as well :) )

as I have a Jeep - is that the short wheel base or the Grand version? Mine is a 3.7L with a max tow capacity of 3.3 tonnes. Our yard is up a very steep hill so I won't tow more than one with my trailer but have collected another large horse from a different yard at the bottom of the hill and towed safely with it.
 
Iv got a disco and dont even feel the horses behind. would tow with anything else tbh. But i dont use it to commute to work, i have a seperate car for all that jazz. mine is old so the fuel consumption isnt amazing. does about 30 mpg. I am going to look into an LPG for my next one though. that might be something to look into. LPG is about 70-80 pence.
 
We are on Isuzu Trooper Number 3 (all we have had since 1992)! Love, love, love them! And every one has been brilliant (2.8 SWB, 3.1 LWB & 3.0 LWD, all Diesel). We currently get just below 30 mpg, and obviously less when towing
 
X trail for horse box, isuzu rodeo crew cab for livestock trailer both fab and do mid thirties when not towing, trail slightly more
 
I tow with a diahtsu fourtrak - great and cheap to run and repair, but they don't make them new anymore. But there's plenty out there, and loads of spares available still.

I have an old wooden trailer which weighs about 1200kg empty, plus Ron and Tom are 600+kg each.... which the truck copes brilliantly with, even on our hills!

ETA - having had 2 disco's I'd avoid them like the plague now - they both died a very rusty death as their body work doesn't seem to stand up very well. My P reg diahstu is the same age as my last disco, but with more miles on and looks a whole load better still!

It's the short wheelbase - the Cherokee Sport not the Grand Cherokee - I was advised that the swb will tow better and that the 3500kg will be more than adequate for a 1000kg Ifor Williams 511 and two horses.

I will only be towing the trailer with usually just the one 17.2 DWB who despite looking huge weighs less than 500kg (no brains you see) :)

I spent many hours trawling though the statistics, data and comments from other users. I feel sure that several competitors at local shows wondered what I was up too when peering at their cars and trailers to see what they were towing with :)
 
Over the years we've had 5 towing vehicles. Our first one was a Landrover Defender which was great for towing but not very comfy, my OH loved it but I hated it. We then bought a 4litre Ford Explorer, loved it so much that we bought another one - down side was the servicing was so expensive and it just loved petrol :) We then had a Pajero, brilliant car but it died of old age so we have now got a Discovery 3 and you don't know you're towing with it, it's brilliant. I tow a I for Williams 510.
 
We are onto our second ford ranger ... towing easily either ifor with a big fat id/tb and a caravan. I think its a tall order to find your towing requirements with good fuel consumption... the ranger averages 25/30 mpg on a long run solo. I ve taken the plunge and invested in a citroen c1 for day to day summer use ... basicly towing vehicle with 3t capacity and low mpg are two different vehicles.
 
I tow an Ifor Williams 510 with a Mercedes ML which is an amazing towing vehicle, is less thirsty than you would think and extremely stable on the road x
 
I have a ford ranger truck and love it! I have had it 6 years! I only use it for towing and carrying stuff in the back now but it does around 30mpg.
 
Toyota Land Cruiser auto - get about 30 to the gallon, whether towing or not - excellent tow vehicle for Ifor Williams 510 & 1 or 2 horses - don't even feel them, and very comfortable car for every day! (Before that, Jeep, Land Rover Defender & Izusu Trooper - all good, but current car my favourite as much smoother & more comfortable)
