We tow with a landrover defender, well I dont personally but my uncle tows us in that.
Friends of mine use their bmw x5 and land rover discoveries to tow, Never had a problem.
I think you're better off with a LWB for towing really as many of the SWB 4x4 (certainly the newer ones) aren't really made for towing anything substantial.
Also depends on your budget and whether you want old or new. I think Mitsubishis have always been renowed for being good for towing as have the Daihatsu Fourtrak but they don't make these anymore.
If you have a bigger budget and want a newer car then the Kia Sorrentos tend to get a good review for towing. My friend has a Hyundai Santa Fe that she tows with (I would assume this is similar in power to a Sorrento) and she is happy with that.
Other than that then Landrover Defenders (although not going to be the comfiest ride). Alot of it's going to be down to what your budget will allow though in reality.
Not sure what trailer yet as if i invest in a shogun i'll have to rent trailers as i wont be able to afford my own for a while.

EF, I'm guessing from a previous post you live around Cardiff, if you are thinking of hiring/ renting a box, Seagull trailer hire in Marshfield do a long term eg summer season hire and they also give you the option to buy at the end. I thought about using them last year but couldn't convince my hubby to put a tow hitch on the back of his car
I don't remember the price but I don;t remember them being ridiculously expensive.
Have just cleaned all the crap out of my megane convertible ready to change it for a 4x4 so am loving this thread!
i tow my Equitrek with a landrover 110 double cab pick up. Fair dos its a 57 plate and high spec inside but its very comfy (has air con, heated seats etc etc) and has loads of room in the pick up bit for wheelbarrows, haynets etc.

Specially chosen over the 110 because I had been used to towing small ponies in 505 with a volvo estate, which had an amazing turning circle. I didn't want to lose any of my manoevrability by going for the long wheelbase version when I had to upgrade to the LR.
Mitsubishi Pajero (automatic). Had it 3 years, very reliable (crosses fingers quickly...!) & auto makes it great round all our local lanes/mountain roads. Not the most comfy seats though- wounldn't want to travel long distance in the back seats.
Terrano 3L Dieses Auto - it's brilliant. I used to have a freelander, I used it once to tow - never again!! Swapped it pretty much as soon as I got a trailer.
We currently tow our rice trailor with our 2litre petrol SWB Vauxhall Frontera Sport and havent had any problems. Bargain too at £550! We only brought it for towing etc so didnt want to spend a massive amount on it
Before that it was a Vauxhall Zafira
, that actually towed a tad better than the frotera does believe it or not!
Before that was a Ford Ranger which I would highly recommend, regret selling it but at the time needed a 7 seater
