Picked up my new to me IW trailers and in comparism to my old rice it weighs a ton.
My car is no lightweight (Toyota Surf 3.0l), but it feels very heavy.
What do you tow yours with?

My car is on a par with the trooper and the discovery so should be well within its capabilities so maybe I am just noticing a difference as the rice was so light?

I've only ever towed the IW so can't compare really - sorry not very useful

Tow HB510 with Nissan Terrano - sometimes with two horses, one being 17hh and have no problems. Have never towed a Rice so cant compare either.

Tow with a 2.5TD Cheerokee Sport (HB510) I've taken some pretty huge horse to - but I did notice a big big difference from towing with a 4lt petrol.

I would have to query your trailer or vehicle then I'm afraid if it is towing heavy.
They are the best balanced trailers on the market, most of the time you don't even know they're there, it sounds like it has a problem, possibly brake sticking, wheels not balanced/correct pressure or something. Is the Surf a pick-up, if so, it might be that you haven't put a balancing weight in the back or the hitch is too high/low too. We've never known an IW to be heavy like you say, especially compared to a Rice unless that was one of their lightweight versions anyway.
We tow with a Daihatsu Fourtrak or a Nissan Terrano and with either of them, even two heavy mares in, you don't know it's there.

We tow a 510 with a Nissan Navarra 2.4 turbo diesel. I take two 17'2 one of which is a heavy hunter and the other is a middle weight - no problem at all. and you don't really notice them. I suspect something is not set up correctly

I used to tow my HB505 with 2 16hh horse in with a LWB (2.8)Mitsubishi Pajero and it didn't feel heavy.
The only time it felt heavy was when I had a problems with the braking system on the trailer, and it definately did not tow as heavy as Rice trailer (one of the older models).

I think the trailer just needs a damn good service.
Bought it off an elderly couple who have done nothing too it maintenance wise so I think a trip to Cotswold trailers is in order

Which may well be the tyres. My old Jeep had semi offroad tyres and never got stuck. My Disco has never got stuck either but has come close a few times as the road tyres it came with did not have the traction needed in mud.

i tow my new 505 Classic with a 3.0L Toyota Hilux Surf and it makes light work of it. Most I've towed is my 500kg Welshie and a 300kg pony and it made it feel so easy, even up pretty steep hills.

Haven't done much with mine yet as both the trailer (511) and the towing vehicle (old 2.8 auto Pajero) are 'new' - but towed my 850 odd kg stallion on a very interesting route to Horse-pital (I got lost thanks to a diversion and ended up going some very interesting places!) - and then towed two biggish lads - probably 550 - 600 kg each - on a longish trip with no problems at all. I've never towed with an auto before - and it's GREAT! Sounds like your trailer wants its brakes checking (I've seen a number of 505's and 510's whose brakes come on when they feel like it!)
