What do you typically wear for riding versus general care?

Hi everyone,

I have rubber riding boots which I was hoping to use for riding plus mucking out, schooling and general care and stable duties, however they aren't the most comfortable things to walk in so am looking at something else to wear when I plan on spending long hours at the stables. Considering mucker boots but are they any good for riding in? They sure are ugly but after trying them on I was in love with their fleecy insoles. So cosy.

I invested in high rise jodhpurs (which I wear belted) as they are far more comfy and warmer than jeans, also got a quilted fleece lined waterproof jacket which was very reasonably priced and stylish. Will be looking for something more suitable up top to go under jacket, wore a running top which is ok but doesn't fit well and colour clashes (not that it's a big deal but still want to look reasonably put together when riding). Any suggestions? I am mostly conscious that winter is approaching and I may get very cold when on the yard but will quickly get hot when riding so need something versatile and weatherproof.

What do you usually wear when riding or when performing stable duties? Do you wear the same stuff or have specific clothes/boots reserved for riding/light stable work?
 
My criteria includes comfort ie warmth or cool, safety, so always my hat, maybe a BP or safety jacket, hi viz, consider your footwear, can you free your feet from the stirrups easily. For my five year old these things are more important than with my 22 year old. I go straight to work from checking the horses and wear the same clothes (feed merchant, out in all Weather, cold, wet etc) so through the winter I live in walking boots, long johns and Mark Todd waterproof riding trousers over the top.
 
I wear country boots for general care. Sometimes I wear the to ride in too, but I find them too chunky to ride in really so don't tend to do any "serious" work with them, mainly just hack.

As far as clothes go, I usually just wear my work clothes as I go up after work - aha. I only feed and groom though as he's kept out for now.

I looove my gilet for when it's cold! It really is surprisingly warm.
 
I wear my work clothes mostly (polo shirt and fleece) and wear breeches on bottom half and do a speedy change in the loo at work (wine merchant) . Soon when it gets colder i will wear my full work clothes ie jeans on the bottom half and will wear my full fleece lines waterproof chaps. if im not riding i will wear my "chilling jeans" and wellies/walking boots depending on the state of the mud.
Also i have some long, thermal boots that are great for riding and general care. Not sure what the boots are called but they are biker looking and woof make them.
 
In the winter I generally wear these for yard work and riding:

My stirrups are wide enough that they can slip out easily enough, though I'll probably get told off for it not having enough of a heel ;). They're waterproof right up the top if laced correctly too.

Clothing-wise, I wear loads of layers so I can take one off if I get too hot. Usually ski socks, leggings, breeches, waterproof trousers on the bottom half; and base-layer (Helly Hansen do some v smart black and navy ones), polo top, fleece/hoody, thin waterproof, waterproof gilet on the top half. Hi Vis jacket then goes over this! I spend most of the winter looking like the Michelin man :p.
 
As winter draws ever closer, I look more and more like a bag-lady. I couldn't describe a single outfit - I just go for whatever is most likely to keep me dry and warm
 
Same clothes for riding and stable work, I just change my wellies for riding boots & chaps to ride - and don my hat and BP! I wear jodhpurs, a tshirt (and a fleece/hoody/jacket) depending on the weather. If I know I'm definitely not riding and am not going to be up long I sometimes pop up in jeans. Have been known to wear jammies if I'm just turning out at 6am!
 
I defo recommend muck boots. I got them as a Christmas present 2 years ago and still wear them everyday now. I only ever have to wear 1 pair of socks, my feet are never cold in them and they are the most comfortable boots to wear. I did think they were a bit heavier/clumpier than usual boots, but after I had worn them a couple of times I stopped noticing. I ride in them too and they don't bother me at all.

In the height of summer I tend to wear ankle boots as they can get a bit sweaty!
 
I wear either trainers (my yard ones) or muckers and i ride in jod boots. As for wearing i wear anything in stables but to ride i have to wear jods or i feel "wrong" lol
 
Same stuff, just more layers in the winter! So jods (with tights underneath if necessary) and as many tops and jackets as needed. I ride in Ariat Trent boots and wear them for yard work in the summer but dig out my wellies for the yard in the winter, solely cos it can get really muddy and wellies are easier to clean and cheaper to replace!
 
I ride in whatever I happen to be wearing at the time, so that would be jeans and some sort of boots, could be yard boots, cowboy boots, riggers, snow boots or wellies.

I do not possess a pair of breeches :( or an English saddle, breeches would look damn silly on a western saddle :D ;)

No-one sees me but the horses so I no longer care. Now, if I were in the UK and exercising out in public, I wouldn't be seen dead riding in jeans :o
 
For yard work on a day I'm not riding woof muckers track suit bottoms and skiing layers on top . If I'm riding (most days ) swap the tracky bums for breeches

I switch my muckers for riding boots ....
 
I live in Dublin River boots, as does my sister. We get a new pair for each other for Christmas, alongside knee length socks plus some of those Thermal socks which are furry inside (we get a size bigger so that we can really layer up the socks, lol). Only hack in them though as they do not put your leg in the proper position for doing any proper work. We live in an old (draughty) house and I hate getting changed for the yard so have a bad habit of wearing skinny jeans or jeggings up to the yard but I'd wear a pair of normal jods for a lesson etc. Other winter essentials: six million pairs of magic gloves, knitted head bands and those fleece snoods, oh and my trusty travel mug :) The masochistic part of me actually likes Winter :)
 
jeans/shorts and walking boots for yard work, jodphurs, safety jodphur boots and chaps for riding. polo shirt, jumper and coat on top depending what is needed. If poo picking or harrowing fields or manege in really hot weather then I strip down to sports top/bra.

I never ride in yard boots, walking boots, trainers, muckers etc. Many years ago a mare I was schooling fell over I did not fall off and my feet remained in the stirrups (I was not unseated as she hit the deck on her side I was still sat in the riding position!) my left foot had 8 bones that were broken-I was riding with correct footwear on but it has left me a bit special about my feet even over 20yrs later.
 
Normally I wear my jods under my jeans or track suit bottoms with wellies. I have the neoprene Wellies so they keep your feet warm. When finished on the yard I slip off my jeans and pop on my riding boots...depending on the time of year I wear jod boots or long ones.
Top I normally wear a t-shirt, jumper, body warmer and a coat as peel the layers off as I get warmer.
I keep my work clothes in the car and get changed before going to work.
It helps if you can keep your yard clothes and boots in your tack locker but if like me you have to have monthly clear out as I tend to chuck clothes in and forget about them...either I end up with no clothes at home or I find items I forgot I had!!!
You don't need to buy horsey brands, your horse doesn't care which designer your wearing!!
 
Well I got some cheap quilted fabric top wellies from asda that are reasonably comfy for mucking out etc and my rubber riding boots will do for riding for now, even though they're not very comfy. Think I will have to invest in some mucker boots for winter though as a few of you have said how warm they are. They're not exactly pricey either compared to some other cosy boots.

My sports bra is proving very comfy for riding, I almost forget I have boobs lol. Next on the agenda will be some fleecy tops and hoodies to go under my jacket and some socks. Somebody please recommend some warm winter socks that won't slither the front of my boots. ARGH!
 
Another bag-lady alert!

Around the yard - cheap wellies and however many layers of socks the weather determines. Clothing wise - anything goes, we do patchy-patchy rather than matchy-matchy

Riding - change into jods (of various stages of repair, any old colour as usually bought in sales) and boots. Straight out of boots after riding as I can't walk in them!!
 
I wear my HKM boots for yard work and sometimes ride in them, for when it gets really cold i have a pair that have fleece/wool on the inside. To ride I have a pair of Toggi Calgary boots which I love to death, but I need to get them repaired :( All 3 boots are really comfy!
 
Another bag-lady here, with a dash of hobo! I look like this year round and wander about in public on my way to the yard, much to my husband's shame ;) but lately I'm getting tired of both horse and me looking like refugees from a war zone while out on our hacks, so I'm going to put some serious effort into cleaning up our act. If this means a dedicated riding wardrobe and dedicated yard wardrobe, so be it :)
 
I ride and do yard work in whatever I'm wearing at the time.. Never wear jods, normally just plain trousers but just swap to my riding boots from wellys. All my best clothes end up as yard gear in time
 
I wear wellies all the time on the yard, only put my riding boots on to ride. And then I still have 'home' boots and 'nice' boots. I also have some country boots that I wear for yard and riding, but can only wear them when it's freezing as they're so warm!

I then wear either soft super skinny jeans from primark, some form of jods/breeches or if it's really hot, leggings. When it's wet I wear waterproof trousers over the top, if it's cold I borrow my friends fleece lined waterproof chaps.

Usually I'll wear polo shirts for everything, when it's cold I'll wear a long sleeved top under or baselayer. When it's hot I do wear a vest because I have a tendency to over heat.

For jumpers, I'll usually wear a fleece, never a hoodie, had that drummed into me at equine college!

I have a beaut Mark Todd soft shell which I'm wearing allllll the time at the moment, warm, shower proof and comfortable. When it gets colder I'll wear my Musto Snug blouson which is super warm with a lovely big collar to keep the wind off my neck.

I have a pair of mucking out gloves which I can wear a thin wool pair under when it's cold. I've got two different pairs of riding gloves too, one normal pair and one waterproof fleece lined pair.

Also, my fleece neck warmer is a god send. Tucks into my polo shirt and keeps me super warm, and no worries about it unravelling like a scarf.

Also, depending on the weather if it's cold and dry I wear my hi viz padded gilet, if not I wear a normal hi viz waistcoat over a coat.

I regularly keep coats/jumpers/scarf/hat/gloves in the car too if the weather changes suddenly!

If I'm not riding I'll wear trackies cause I'm lazy!
