I posted recently about my pony's rubbing UV mask. He has to wear it all the time because he has uveitis. I have since tried the Equivisor, Nsgs Horse and they rub as well/don't fit. I added fleece to my Guardian mask under the eyes to stop the rubbing and it seems slightly better.

However his face is a mess. What would you use on this? I have been putting some balm all over and zinc oxide on the sore bits (which aren't actually very sore). I am asking myself if this is more than just rubbing and I should wash with betadine, but I am wary around the eyes.

You can get a protective spray, that is breathable that if its external will protect the skin and help with healing the 'rubs'.
There is now a cheaper version made by someone else.
I've just clicked your link out of curoisity , and see there is a barrier cream as well, which might be easeir on the face?

I'm tempted to get one of each for the next time my horse self-harms!

I use nothing.

My poor horse looks like a welfare case with rubs. Last year I was offered a 'wonder product' that resolves all these issues (its got all the good reviews and scientific evidence you could hope for) so I tried it on one half of his face. The other half, I did nothing with. They both recovered at exactly the same time.

I feel like I should 'do something' but really, it's better left alone. The vet was at the yard, I asked her advice and she also said better to leave it.

If it got worse then I'd have looked at the steroidal creams.

I washed everything yesterday and it looks better. There are some raw patches where I think he must be itching and rubbing his face. They have moved fields and there are no posts or trees to rub on anymore, so hopefully this will help.

I have a balm that seems to stop the chafing and if that doesn't work I will try the barrier cream.

Just to update. I think it was a reaction to something. It has now completely gone and no more itching. I used Warendorf baume and just kept the mask clean. It got worse before it got better.
