Hey there my lovelies
Winter is coming up fast and the weather is getting worse and worse everyday, so just wondering what form of shelter do you have in your field? Not including an actual shelter lol I mean like man made wind breaks or trees etc? Definately looks like we won't have a new shelter this winter/ won't have ours repaired anytime soon so will prob be shelter-less spudlet suggested hay bale barrier but my lot will definately find a way to eat it all so what do you lot use? Any suggestion to how a could get a cheap form if shelter? Thanks dearies x

The hay bale barrier is a good idea and you can stop the naughty toads eating what you built by covering the wall in a tarp and pegging it into the ground. You have to make it tight so it doesnt flap, but it does work, and is better than no shelter at all.

You can't see it unfortunately, but this is just one of the smaller sections of bush my horses have. We don't have a shelter in this part but we used old cedar fencing rails (we have literally tons of the stuff, like the fence rail in the front actually) and nailed them to some of the trees (sorry trees) in a roofless three sided shelter. It is about 7' high, maybe 14' long with 2 shorter angled sides, the horses can get out of the wind whichever way it is blowing. You can see by the way the trees have grown which direction our prevailing wind comes from.

Just simple panelling or 8 x 4 sheets of marine ply fixed to convenient trees, or fence posts serve as reasonable windbreaks too.

We have a wall of trees that work very well as wind breakers....they never stand anywhere near them and tend to congregate in the middle of their mashoof field

We stacked up six rotton haylage bales up in our field as a windbreak. We removed the plastic, but not the string, and stacked them up two bales high in a slight semi circle. Our neighbour said she sees them sheltering against them quite often. They did pick at them a bit initially, but they soon decided they weren't very nice and the grass was better! Two years on they have squished down a lot, and are growing grass on them, but still just enough for shelter!
