i have absolutely no idea what to wear! my horse is injured so i am just on the floor this season. i have spent the winter looking a complete fright in a mixture of bits of my sons old sno board gear/river island jeans/the second best pair of uggs! i really need a nice jacket that doesnt make me look like michelin man! dubarry? kingsland? jade holland cooper? last year we went to a premier pony show when the weather was absolutely atrocious but some mothers who had spent the weekend in a lorry in a flooded lorry park still managed to look really good on the sunday!

well i don't have kids but my general approach to what to wear is what i can find in the morning  i really couldn't care less what i look like as long as i'm warm...

In this situation, often,as when small SJMs are competing, they have mostly stolen all my horses,so I wear best britches (i.e. Kingsland) and chaps, plus fluffy hoody and cheapo bodywarmer from Matalan, chaps and spurs,so I look like I just got off 2nd string at home, and very, very busy training etc etc. I dare the other mums to challenge....;-))

An interesting post and a topic that crosses my mind from time to time and worries the hell out of me! I generally am in jeans that I've done the yard in that morning, a fleece that has hay attached and the windblown hair look. I would like to look glamorous but I just don't think it's going to happen.

I did buy a waistcoat from Ryedale last year which is tweed but has big pockets (and was relatively cheap) as I thought that would smarten my jeans, but I found it on a hanger in a cupboard last weekend and so it hasn't seen the light of day yet!

Oh I think this post has great potential!

Right, probably coming at it from a different angle being abroad and all, but you simply wouldn't find the dubarry and barbour look going on here. Nor Uggs for that matter.... However Belgians don't really do mud either! What you do need is items from the winter catalogues of either Scapa Sports or HV Polo..... Long padded jackets are in at the winter shows for the spectators with the mostest, and even fur seems to go down well! Of course the best way to stay warm and dry, and pony-slobber-free is to stay in the safety of the bar whilst the child battles the elements and the pony slobber in a character building exercise :p.

PMSL @ Louise! You know that's what you were wearing last time I saw you....

When child was younger/less experienced, it was breeches, body warmer (for the pockets), and with a hat in the car, ready to get on when pony was a prat

I still have a fat ar$e so refuse to spend lots of £ on nice gear!

Equestrian Clearance is my friend for now ;):p:rolleyes:

Where are you going? Not Country I guess? Sunday I am in Gesves with William, having lessons with Anne d'Ieteren and Jos Kumps: my legs are going to hurt...

Nah,as with last weekend, got friendly neighbourhood course-builder to come and put a course up in my arena, made a big pot of chili and bought lots of alcohol..... Big success, and far better for my ponies, who have a 2000km trip in 10 days! :-O

Oh,and my outfit?
What hasn't been washed already and packed...so pretty grungy leftovers in bottom of wardrobe.....;-))

Not actually mum but I have borrowed various children over the years to compete various ponies. I used to look a total fright, frayed bottom jeans (normally poo and mud stained) faded sweatshirt and whatever manky stinking yard coat I happened to grab! I was truely embarassed as the ponies, riders, tack etc was immaculate and I was a state! As we have been eventing for the last few years now I finally decided to smarten myself up to "fit in" a bit more, so down the straight leg faded but not frayed jeans, Dubarry (style!) boots, various joules polos/sweatshirts and invested in a new musto that lives in the lorry so that I always have a clean(ish) jacket to wear ;) I still looked a bit of a grubby mess by the end of the day but then I was groom as well and no matter how hard I tried not to I still wiped muddy hands down jeans after studding and I always seem to have a slobber mark on my polo shirt/sweatshirt over my left boob!

Was that the course you uploaded a video of you jumping on Teabag? Do you leave your children behind to run your yard and go to school, or do they get to come?

Yes and yes. But lets not hijack someone elses post.....;-)
(Oh,but they fly out for the half term and Easter hols,Char rides the 1*)

Well said "child" is now 22, but I'm still on duty - filming or test calling etc! This year I will be all snazzy in my new Trakehner t-shirt, fleece and gilet, courtesy of the 50% off Trakehners UK sale lol

so true! it is scarily easy to forget about yourself! last night we managed to park the lorry up to get an indian take away after daughters lesson and i saw another mum from school about my age having a meal and she looked amazing! i was in filthy jeans and a parka! i thought i must do something about this xx

I've only come on this to see if you've caused a fight yet!!

No seriously, I'm loving this thread. Glad I'm not the only scruffy mum! I'm the one who has spent the morning prior to the show scrubbing stable stains off pony's white bits, and plaitting up, while hubby gets his son ready. I do a lot of the grooming - which is the art of transfering all the dirt off the pony and onto yourself. I look a right state. I love it when it rains and I can hide it all under a long waxed coat! I really need to sort my "ground" wardrobe out. Luckily child is getting older now, and much more capable of doing a lot himself, so perhaps I will develop some glamour! I do get my own back when I'm eventing, as child is chief horse washer post XC...

yep would love to know how people manage to look "grown up" and smart at horse events, always look like Ive been dragged through a hedge backwards (often have :))
All tips welcome
Leaving good coat in lorry has been duly noted :D

this is what my mum does :p

It must be a Mum thing :D

*giggles*

Been there, done that! However she's all grown up now and at the first dressage outing I went to I was all dolled up in my competition gear and there was my daughter, breeches, bodywarmer, hat at the ready just in case horse was a prat!

She's a good girl:D

my mum, who comes eventing with me on a purely jolly basis (occasionally she is on granny duty, but normally she is chief water bottle holder) normally sports a dubarry/jeans/joules combo.... topped off with a heavily endorsed by my company coat

much better than when we go racing & its cold, when she sports a very dubious coat/hat combo.... on more than one occasion i have walked right past her.... me & my slinky dresses!

I read this thread, saw this comment and had to go look at OP's other posts... Provided a good evenings entertainment to say the least :D

My Mum's ground outfit consists of varying items of tweed, green and brown - although she's recently taken to buying various brightly coloured Musto tops and gilets, it's an addiction, although one I seem to benefit from too :D :D

When I'm on the ground, it's usually jeans, a sweatshirt, bodywarmer and boots. As this is my daily wardrobe, it doesn't take much thought, although I try to pick the cleanest selection off the floor :D

how do people have time to actualy plan or think about what they are wearing? by the time that lorry is packed, pony plaited, child groomed(and visa versa) husband instructed, and provisions planed, I just go in what I standing in! as long as it is waterproof enough and warm enough clean enough would be a bonus! I always get covered in pony hair and saliva anyway(ponys not husband or childs!) seriously though, skiwear from TKMAX is good stuff!

My mum normally wears jeans, dubarrys in winter or short boots, a random polo top, often a joules/musto jumper and then one of her many joules coats on top :)

When I am grooming I tend to wear either jeans or if I may be required to ride to warm up then breeches, ariat short boots in summer and dubarry's in winter (occasionally uggs i must add), any old t-shirt in winter as it doesn't get seen, kingsland hoody, equiport bomber jacket/ or long padded kingsland down jacket which is soooo warm, kingsland headband or wooly hat. Of course in summer it just tends to be a nice top (joules/musto etc.) with jeans/breeches

My mum normally wears jeans/ shorts with deep pockets, a t shirt and jumper and if it's cold a blouson coat thing. She also pretty much always wears steel capped yard boots, unless it's warm in the summer when she wears her tesco's trainers- they cost £3 (which is why they were bought), and are pink and sparkly. My sister and I cringe at them so much!

Though as I'm taking the 'groom' role more and more alongside mum, I find myself donning similar outfits...

Can my mum also be the exception to the rule of the "jod wearing" mum's crew? If my horse was messing about, my sister would get on him and if my sister's horse was messing about- we'd run for cover!

aw love all the replies! and no fights this time! a first for me! glad im not the only one! and thank you lolo for making me laugh and mentioning shorts! id forgotten about summer. everything looks better with a tan and i can put on my summer uniform of shorts, vest and tuffa boots! the man in our local tesco express calls me lara croft! in the meantime im moving to belgium - you all sound too fabulous! xx

I do not think you should be allowed to comment on this considering you always always manage to look horribly glamorous whatever the weather and occasion, so I refuse to believe your mother is any different!

My friend still comments on how amazing you looked when we bumped into you at Blenheim the year it was torrential rain and ZP won the Europeans!!:p

I have my suspicions that when your boys are out doing stuff, you always manage to look effortlessly amazing. Yes, I am jealous.... ;)

I'm a little confused by this post to be honest. Do people actually plan what they are going to wear when they drive their kids to events?

As it normally involves horrendously early starts and mucking out before we leave I just wear whatever I wear on every other day of the week.......I didn't think anybody would ever care/notice what I was wearing?

I am genuinely bemused.
