What do you when your horse is being a twit out hacking?

Depends on the spook.

If he's genuinely just having a look at something over a hedge, I let him stop to have a nosey. I'd rather he had the time to decide it's not a threat as opposed to throw us both under a car if he's not seen it properly.

If it's a silly spook, first of all he gets told that he's a*se in a calm smiley voice. If there's an approaching car we stand still. I'd rather we weren't moving any direction than towards the car (he managed to hit/ get hit by a car spooking at bullocks in a field a few years ago) which doesn't help my nerves! If there isn't a car coming he gets told to walk on. He goes very much by voice commands, which is fab until you're in a dressage ring! I carry a stick, but tend not to use it as behaviour seems to degenerate if I do. He know's he got a good reaction if I do. If he's being very silly one sharp smack on the shoulder seem to remind him where he is and what he's doing.

If I feel my self tensing up I sing, usually an awful rendtion of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. It makes me breathe if nothing else, probably makes him behave too in the hope of shutting me up :o
