This might have been started before but what do you wish someone had told you before you brought or loaned your first horse?

To expect the unexpected. To prepare for their loss as unless you sell you will have to make that decision. Not to put all your happiness into horses. I have just had to PTS mine and because all my happiness was based around him it has been much worse than perhaps for those who have more diversity of activities in their lives.

There will be ups and downs, but you will be lucky enough to find there is more than one 'horse of a lifetime' out there so be easy.

This. And they take more time, money, effort, worry than you think. But for the right horse(s) it’s so worth it.

But don’t stay with wrong partnership.

And horses are so damned fragile, 2 locals have lost horses unexpectedly in prime of life in last month. Enjoy every day, do the fun stuff. Tomorrow’s not guaranteed.

Buy with brain and not heart. Meaning you should go for the horse that actually fits your wishes, even if it’s not love at first sight instead of the wrong one that you instantly fall in live with. Horses are easy to love, especially if they give you many good rides.

Be aware that you'll be taking on a friend and not a machine...... and also that you need to be prepared for one day having to make a difficult decision and say a final goodbye. I'd say this to anyone buying a horse over the age of 15....... if you're not prepared to make "the decision" when the time comes then don't buy it. Period. None of the "companion" or "loan" ad's which only means that someone else has to make the damn decision: determine that YOU will do the right thing when it is necessary. And no it isn't easy and yes it will be like cutting a piece of your heart out.
