Hello everyone :D

Just out of interest, do those of you with black horses have any photos of them when clipped?

I had a black mare once who would stay completely black when clipped, but the one i have now goes a real silvery colour :)

Photos anyone? :D

I havn't got any photos clipped I'm afraid but I wouldn't say mine really changes colour. He does get more silvery/grey flecks when he's changing coat from winter to summer but that's all. If anything clipping him brings out his darker coat. This is him in may, you can just see the vague line of bib clip I had done

I am aware that my mare is piebald not black but:

This was literally straight after she was clipped on 28th October

And this was the 20th February

Please excuse the diabolical state she's in.

This isn't a great picture but shows what cass looks like... not that different! But she was very shiny this year so maybe that's why..

All of the 'black' racehorses I clip go silvery when done. Some of the bays go a manky mouse colour, other keep theur nice rich colouring. Same with chestnuts, some go a naff pale colour while others look positively stunning and rich.

My boy goes a silver colour when clipped - hate the clipping time as he just doesnt look the same!
My dad bless him always asks why he chages colour in the winter bless him :o

Gerry went a silvery colour when clipped last winter but Daisy my coloured always stayed a lovely shiny black. I'd only had Gerry a few weeks though when I clipped him and he was very poor so we'll see if a healthier diet and lifestyle gives him a blacker coat this year.

This is the first winter we had this horse, he went a horrible smokey grey colour.

My black h/w cob looks like a silverback gorilla when clipped, then as his clip grows out and his summer coat comes, he goes brindle black and chestnut - not an attractive look!!

Depends when you clip them. Early clips and late clips tend to stay black. Mid winter clips tend to go silver. It depends on the hair construction as the tips of the winter hais are always black but some blacks - their hairs get lighter nearer the skin. The same with bay.

Ahhh i see! Thank you :)

I guess that is why my mare goes silvery, she's not a 'true black', she has a very slight brown tinge in her!

Mine goes a silver colour the first couple of days but soon changes to a shiny black as the coat grows. It's always lovely and shiny though. It's amazing how roans change colour though, I knew of a blue roan, who was black in summer and white in winter when clipped:)
