Just curious when you have had a horse for so long you know them inside out they can still surprise you. What have yours done that is completely out of character?

I will start it off...

I have had my mare for 17 years and she is very easy to do but still has a sparkle in her eye. On Sunday i decided to put her and my younger horse out in the sand turnout paddock while i sorted out their stables, because it was a bit miserable i decided to put a bit of haylage in to keep them occupied. I went in and bent down to spread the haylage out, they both came over to investigate so i sent them away while i was sorting it out at which point my mare decided that I was taking too long so she nudged my bum with her nose and send me flying face down into the sand. I felt so stupid, I got myself up and shouted at her she had a really mischievous look on her face and my other horse was well out of the and looking as if to say "oh no you are in trouble now".

It just goes to show you can never trust them no matter how much you know them.

Turned our 22 yo mare out (we have had her for 20 years) for a couple of hours whilst my daughter & I went to help at our local PC show. Hubby was to catch her, get her ready and bring her over in the trailer. He is a horsey hubby (she was his horse originally) but he didn't bank on that day being the first time she was ever going to be difficult to catch. She raced up and down, up and down, and got all hot and sweaty so he ended up having to hose her down before he could load her! She can be soooooo naughty!

My 17yr old has decided he hates his stable, especially when the rain hits the roof... so much that he went potty a few weeks ago and lashed out and (accidently) hit me, broke my arm, when we came back from the hospital he had broken down the door of his stable and was standing outside the front door of the house looking for us. Wierd eh.

He makes me laugh.

My 24 yrs TB boy holds his bowl out like Oliver everytime after he's finished his meal. Its just so comical.

I want some more please

My 30yr old TB went on a jolly!, I let her out of the field as she looked so forlorn at the gate when i was bringing in one of the cobs so i felt sorry for her and fully expected her to meander up to her stable, she had other ideas and went walking off, i followed her and if i walked faster so did she! In the end i had hold of her tail and was shouting to my oh to bring another headcollar, she was really striding out head up ears pricked not bothered in the slightest she was dragging me and the cob along!!

Or when i took them out doing ride and lead!! hmm having her head near my knee was not what she had in mind! She had her im a race horse and my nose needs to be in front head on lol talk about pull my arms out!!

I do tell her she used to be a race horse 26 years ago!! she doesnt listen though lol!

the 38yr old we have on retirement livery with us decided she didnt want to wait in the field until we had put the foals in so she ran threw the electirc fencing, but instead of coming to the stables turned & ran down the drive. She has never in her life been out of the yard gates! She cantered down the drive (about 100m) & trotted off up into the village, luckily its a very quiet village & road. Disappeared from sight & a few minutes later (we were panicing grabbing headcollars & gettin in the car) reappeared trotted down our neighbour drive & we caught her. Got her into her stable & she demanded her dinner, oblivous to what she had just done! lol!

Our 30yr old cob mare is normally is the calmest sanest pony ever.. she doesnt like running about and the only time u normally see her trot is to her feed bucket. Lots of times friends have been over with there horses and normally she doesnt bat an eye lid but on sunday just gone MontyandZoom came over with Zoom and her friends pony Jester.. and the old mare went loopy galloping up and down her paddock, farting and twisting like a young filly. I really dont know what got in to her but it was nice too see

We have chickens at our yard and often I scatter bread and Tescos madeira cake (don't ask) on the ground for them as they are semi-free range. My 23 yr old veteran Sunny is sometimes allowed to be semi-free range too and I spotted him one day when he had mooched over to the chickens and pushed them away while he hoovered up their bread and cake! Very fond of his tum is my ned!

My 24 year old Welsh Sec A has started to regularly jump the electric fence, she's 11.3hh and those electric fence posts must be 3ft high. Occasionally you can see she's getting on a bit, then she does something like that to remind you that she's fine.

Actually, she's in trouble because she's prone to laminitis (hasn't had it in years) so really shouldn't be making a habit of jumping out when the spring arrives. Might have to buy the extra tall posts.

It really makes me smile when i read posts like these, it proves that they still have so much life left in them even when we think they are looking there age.

I really should learn to tell my mare off more but the things she does just make me laugh.

My 21yo still hoons off down the field leaping off all fours like a spring lamb - in fact I think he's teaching the foals extra moves

Also still likes to throw the occasional fly buck in when he's working - still in full work and not stiff in the slightest.
