Every 'approx weight chart' I have found has Shetland ponies weight as between 150-200kg for a standard Shetland (!) my standard 40" shetland is currently 230kg on my weight tape.

She has been on a steady diet and has lost quite a bit of weight already, but if she loses another 30kg to take her down to the maximun 200kg she will be seriously underweight!!

So, just wondering, who else out there has a shetland, and what do they weight at present. as I think in this case the 'suggested weight range' is a wee bit out!!:D

We have 5 standard shetties and their weights range from 200kg to 300kg approximately.

Regarding the suggested weight range, as long as she's a good weight I wouldn't worry about it too much :)

I find that weigh tapes make them seem heavier than they are. I know my TB sits at about 550-560kg and the weigh tape says he is 600-610kg. So take it with a pince of salt. The only thing they are good for is when you either want to gain, loose or maintain weight as you can keep checking them. As for how much my shetlands weigh - I wouldn't want to know! If they recommend a max of about 200kg then they obviously haven't met my 42" wide as a bus ponies with more hair than Cousin It ponies!

When Stiggy was weighed to be gelded, he was 150kg. Vet said he was spot on, but he is shaped more like a small fine pony than a fat hairy shetland!

Mine are both around the 220kg mark, are well rounded but not obese. I worm them at 250kg so share a wormer between them.

I will weigh my shettie mare , Tilly later and just see. I've got to be honest I've never weighed her, ( hears audible gasp from fellow HHo's ) When i worm her i worm for 250kg , so it may be a good idea to have a go...mine seems to be slim front and back with big belly in the middle.. Also my mini american shettie is like a barrel but still has a great wooly coat so god knows what he's on

I had Inka weighed about 10yrs ago, and he was 175kg. He's an over height miniature Shettie. Think 8.1hh ish.

I think he probably weighs less than that now, as he's a lot less chunky than he used to be.

The maximum height for minis is 34 inches is it not  8.1hh = 33 inches = not over height :) My mini is 32/33 inches, quite a big bruiser compared to some mini Shetties we see in the show ring but she is still within the height limit :D

I might ride one of my big 'uns to work tomorrow and stick on the weighing scales just out of inerest!

Now that would be cool, and very topical 'Pony goes on train' 'Pony goes to A&E' and the HHO version, 'Pony goes to work to be weighed' :D

Please tell me you work in a sweet shop, that would be ace, Shettie on one side of the old fashioned weight scales and loads of pear drops on other side :D:D

Thanks for the answers guys, keep them coming, seems to be in general that the range should be more like 150 up to 250 for a proper chunky shetland monkey :)

Tilly the (standard size I think) weighs 210kg but as you can see has big belly but not much back and front - we think she's approx 16yrs old

Beau is mini shet , he weighs 194kg  and is 7 yrs old ( and get this he's a silver palomino - yeah well someone made that up i reckon :D:D ) He's a lofty 20" high. And again is huge round the middle and living on fresh air ( although i had to bribe them with hay to get the weight tape anywhere near the little sods!! The pink bits are sunlight by the way before anyone thinks he's a funny colour!
