I have to admit it confuses me; ie if your horse is say four on 1st jan, but then has it's "real" birthday on 1st feb, is it classed as 4 or 5 for the rest of the year!

IE any foal born up to 31 dec technically becomes a year old on 1st Jan.Any horse born in the calendar year 2010 will become a 2yo on 1st jan 2012.I hope this helps .So in your example if a horse has its 5th birthday on the 1st Feb it will be classed as 5yo from 1st Jan previous.

yes Im sure thats right, I looked it up once to check I was right as it seems in recent years its just being lumped together, I dont know why that is. Either its convenience for competition, or passports, or people dont know its not right, or its been changed and I didnt get the memo :D

All the Disciplines adopted it as the only fair way for age classes it would be totally unworkable in say BE to have TBs having there ages change on the 1st Jan and non TBs 1st may which was the traditional date for non TBs.

Technically a horse born on 31st December 2010, would be a yearling on 1st January 2011. (at one day old!)

So if your horse was born on 1st Feb 2008, he would be 1yo on 1/Jan/09, 2yo on 1/Jan/10, 3yo 1/Jan/11, so this Jan 2012 he would turn 4yo. His Feb birthday is ignored and he would be a 4yo this year. If he was born in 2007 he would be a 5yo.

Does that make sense?
