what does everyone do with there 2 turning 3 year olds?

One of mine is just 3 (born June 07). She is in her 2nd season of in hand showing...at home I either just lead her out round the lanes or practice trotting, standing square etc as you would have to do in the show ring. I should add that she is a mini Shetland so never going to be ridden but I think we are going to break her to drive the winter after she turns 4 :)

I was walking mine out in hand. Taking it to various places like the local village/ woodland paths etc. I must have gone out about once a fortnight or there abouts.

Mine was wearing a bridle and I would also (in the autumn) put a saddle (yes fitted by a master saddler) and walk her out in that too. By Oct, I then started sitting on her back and that's about it.

In her 3rd yr, I did the breaking, but most of the basics were already there so it was incredibly easy. I must add that her 3rd yr was VERY quiet and hardly ridden more than twice a month. She did a bit more as a 4yr old and is now (5yr) doing everything.

I've got a cob who turned 3 last month.

He goes for walks to see the world, sometimes in hand, sometimes in longreins. He often wears his saddle for the walks.

He has been sat on and not in the slightest bit bothered. He has also been led about with my tiny (6st) mum riding him, 100yrs up the road and back.

He perfect to handle in all ways (baths, clips, boxes, feet).

He's been out to various shows this summer and last year and just spends most of the day snoozing.

He's having a huge growth spurt at the mo so depending on how he's looking in the autumn, I might do a tiny bit more ridden wise, but it'll be next spring before he does any proper work.

Sorry, case of RTFQ.:(

I don't lunge my youngsters much, but they would be doing everything else. Bitted, saddled, long reining, leading from another horse, ground tying, standing perfectly when told (learning that 'whoa' means 'whoa!' instantly, and don't move your feet either!) backing up, turning, pole work, water, does he wash down/go through it? All the usual spook busting. Popping a few poles, maybe jumping lane (afterall, in the field they'd think nothing of hopping over a ditch or a log)

I'd also have had mine in harness, plus all the usual trailer stuff. Take him to a couple of shows perhaps?

Enjoy.
