I'd much sooner have a grackle than a stronger bit.

On advice of saddler (who is also an instructor) I've put a (slack) mexican grackle on my 4yo as he was really getting into a bad habit, which this should nip in the bud.

Plus I'm also told the mex. grackle are comfier than cavesson and flash nosebands as they sit on a less flashy/veiny part of the face without restricting airflow. PLUS he was saying he hates flash' due to the way they over interfere with the horses face.

If I tried a flash on my baby he would explode, but he was so sweet and calm with the mex grackle.

Katenjack, the cob would have been too small around his nose, read my post above somewhere, the full is on the 2nd to LAST hole around his nose. I have no brakes in his pelham whether the curb is loose or tight. Ive tried mullen mouth, link, french link pehams and he hates them all. He only likes the happy mouth one but I currently have no breaks no matter what!

LOL Golddustsara, you are welcome to him lol!

Scribbles- Bear doesn't like the flash very much either, I dont know what he'll think of this as I haven't ridden him in it yet (shoes hanging off till monday)

Im going to ride him with his egg butt french link and see how he goes.

Thanks for all the good advice, Ill pop it up a hole of 2 and see how we go!

Grackles are the latest fashion fad too arn't they?

It's a mexican noseband, there's a difference. If you don't knwo the difference then maybe you should avoid commenting on fit. And yes mexican nose bands are all the fashion at the momoent, no one would be seen dead in a grackle

why not just try a stronger bit or something with a curb chain, you can always put a rubber guard on it if you feel he may over react to start with.

A curb chain won't stop a horse crossing it jaw and would therefore be useless if that's why you need a mexican noseband for. Also a curb chain in the wrong hands can break a horse's jaw, a flash in the wrong hands will cause discomfort and the horse will tire quickly due to retricted air. I'd take the latter myself, broken jaw = bad. Plus if you fit a nose band incorrectly another livery/instructor can clearly see and tell you. A tight curb chain is hidden and by the time the bone breaks it's too frikin late for anyone to tell you.

In addition if the OP was making a fashion statement I imagine she would have been asking about her JW Mexican noseband bridel that match the overly expensive saddle, reins, stirrup leathers and stirrup. A £7 noseband has been bought for a purpose and that alone.

It needs to be slightly higher and the top strap needs to be done up on a shorter hole so that the rings sit back off the cheek bones (you can see they're further forward than the cheekpieces and could rub).

I'll buy him posh expensive stuff next year when he decides to stop growing!

Hiya,
my tuppenceworth would be that it looks a bit big, but as you've already said he's between sizes and it wasn't too expensive, I would put some more holes in it so that you can get it to sit a bit higher on his nose.
Hope it helps your brakes!

It looks fine to me, only thing is the front flash bit is too loose. Try to tighten up the back buckle a little more then it will let you tighten the front flash bit if that dont work put some more holes in. When you put it on make sure you get it equal both sides and that the middle (x) is in the middle and high. Thats one of my pet hates seeing horses with them too low.

hope that makes sense.
