What does the red number in brackets represent?

Hi all,

this is probably a really stupid question but.... I don't understand what the the red number in brackets is directly next to the number of repiles on each post. I've explained this really badly- sorry. For example there might be the following written in the 'replies' box next to the title of a post:

36<font color="red"> (3) </font>
