What does TOBIANO mean?

I have a 12hh filly with a French passport. She is piebald and described as Tobiano - I thought that was how the French described Piebald.

But I still don't understand! Puzzle's markings don't look like any of yours! I'll add lots of photos here. Her markings aren't oval shaped at all?!

Do you see what I mean about her markings having sharp edges and they're not typically "cow-like"!

Wah =[

The jagged, 'lacy' edges are sabino. Not a good photo but you can clearly see similar patterning on the legs of the colt and Robin, who is classed as a sabino frame overo (as no white crosses her topline from wither to tail) Does Puzzle have any roany patches as well?

Cob face I think she's more of a Tovero

According to the APHA "Dark pigmentation around the ears, which may expand to cover the forehead and/or eyes. One or both eyes blue. Dark pigmentation around the mouth, which may extend up the sides of the face and form spots. Chest spot(s) in varying sizes. These may also extend up the neck. Flank spot(s) ranging in size. These are often accompanied by smaller spots that extend forward across the barrel, and up over the loin. Spots, varying in size, at the base of the tail."

Mine is tobiano frame (white over his back) with sabino (very jagged blue outline/roaning when clipped) and splash gene (white face, blue eye). Right mix!

No, none at all. Shes either brown or white, no roan at all!! xxxx

If you clip her in future, you may well see the blue jagged lines between the brown and the white-that is the sabino gene causing roaning. It's not raon as in strawberry roan, for example. It can be invisible til you clip or until a horse is a bit older when the roaning shows up.

Not that I've noticed on her. She hasnt been clipped yet obviously but her coat is pretty thin at the moment so I think it'd be seen by now =]

So does that rule her out for being "sabino"? Also, if her passport says she Tobiano does that mean they've tested her for the gene?

Unless it specifies tested I doubt she has been, she looks pretty classic if she is the horse in the OP. Having one pattern by no means excludes a horse from having another as well. Splash and sabino are often seen alongside tobiano.

I dont know if it specifies I'll have a look at the passport tomorrow. I thought she looked pretty "classic" as well, definitely not a specific pattern. I've learnt something new today though =]

Isnt that just where the brown hair is mixing with the white when the colour changes? Will have a look tomorrow! =]
