He gets some pleasure (mouth open, lips looking like he's grinning, head at a funny "oh yes that's goooooooooooood" angle) from me giving him quite full on massage over top of shoulder blades and behind shoulder and some parts of his neck. Lines up in position for me to do one side and then turns round obligingly so I can do the other side.
My mare likes me to cradle her head in one arm and scratch the top of the underside of her jaw with the other. The cob, well he's a cob.... he likes to stuff his face!
Body brushing his forehead. Also rubbing behind his shoulder and behind his withers, makes the most amazing faces. He also shifts about to make me rub/scratch in the right places.
Definitely having his withers scratched, he pulls lovely faces and swings his head back and forth if you get the right spot. He loves it so much that if there isn't an obliging person/horse around to do it for him, he will get down on his knees to rub his withers against the fence rails. He hasn't broken a fence yet, but it's only a matter of time...
Ron - at this time of year likes to have his withers scrubbed with the plastic curry comb... and if there's noone watching he'll return the favour (shhh....), but in the summer he finds eating relaxing, well any time of year really.....
Tom - too many voices in his little head to be relaxed, but the closest he gets is whilst being clipped. It's like the noise drowns out the voices and he actually nods off, drools and snores!
Mine liked her forelock brushed backwards between her ears, with a mud brush. She put her head down and leant into you much harder than I would have thought to press, with her eyes closed.
Mine likes to lick metal - top of his stable door or metal gate - after he's had food. Also loves having raspberries blown on the side of his muzzle. He is a little annoying when I try to clip his face too as he wants to have the flat of the clippers rested on his top lip/nose. Basically, he likes any sensation around his muzzle - not sure what the metal licking is all about mind, he's always done it!
Just to add - I assume it's an endorphin thing as twitching a horse is supposed to release endorphins isn't it? Theregore i guess he is trying to get that sort of 'buzz' from it.
A gentle rub behind the ears, of course one ear at a time ONLY! lol, but then he remembers he is terribly head shy, opens his eyes, throws his head around and smacks me in the face.
My horse is at his most relaxed at a competition, tied to the trailer munching on a haynet watching the world go by. He's more relaxed there than at home for some reason!
Grooming, he tooks into his hay, totally relaxes, basically he just loves you being in the stable with him, even if you just sit down next to his pile of hay, he's a very happy horse, soon as you get up and leave the stable he's got his head over the door watching every move I make, he needs to know what's going on around him and why you are not with him, if you ingore him, he do anything to get my attention, always nickering at you if are not with him or in with another horse.
Apart from eating, which is her favourite passtime, mine totally chills out when she is being shod! She just switches off completely when the farrier is shoeing her. However she hates all the things that other horses find relaxing, like grooming, cuddles etc. Strange animal.
Sunbathing apparently, lying in the snow doesn't matter it seems. The babies have been lying by the shed most of the morning - it holds the heat, brilliant sunshine, out of the wind, shame that it is -15C out there right now.
