I got my Horse in May, with no rugs. So I am having to buy all her winter jammies now.

I have a:

lightweight no fill turnout
Heavyweight 300g necked turnout
Stable fleece
Medium 200g stable non necked

What else would you have? Not going to get a heavy weight stable yet, as on the colder days she will have the fleece under the medium and that might do her. If she gets colder I will go out and buy her one. I do however think I should go out and get a medium weight turnout. She will be clipped, but not a full clip. She's a TBXWBXID 6YO, she will be out every day and in at night.

How many winter rugs do you have?

I only tend to use a medium weight turnout and a liner.

I use the MW throughout winter and pop the liner in when it gets very cold (like last years snow), I have never had a problem with them getting cold (even the oldies) and they are out 24/7, 365 days a year.

Errmmm...

For the youngest, he has:

1 x no fill turnout (standard neck)
1 x 100g turnout (standard neck)
1 x 200g turnout (high neck)
1 x 200g turnout (full neck)
1 x 400g turnout (full neck)
1 x 350g Stable rug
1 x 100g stable rug
1 x Fleece (useful liner)
1 x Wicking cooler rug (useful liner)

I think that's it for him.

Please don't make me count up for the other two, as I think I might cry. I know that when I only had one horse, he had 14 rugs alone...

I think I might have issues with rugs...

I haven't yet been through the boxes that were provided when I bought big chap but the two section a's last year had a medium full neck turnout and live out all year. I won't rug til about October or November so they can get nice and hairy first. I only bought cheapies for £30 from ingatestone and will do the same this year, saves the hassle of washing and repairing then!!! :)

I don't tend to bother with stable rugs, usually just leave turnouts on unless they've somehow become wet/damp underneath. I find they dry better then.

My IDxTB has..

1 x no fill Amigo LW with detachable neck (I prefer detachable necks to full/fixed necks)
1 x 80g Premier Equine with detachable neck (just purchased off Ebay second hand absolute bargain!!)
1 x 220g JHL with detachable neck
1 x 360g Fal-Pro (old, don't know which one) with half neck

He also has:
1 x Amigo cotton stable sheet
1 x JHL fleece. Don't tend to use that much though as it gets covered in shavings and slips, so it's been demoted to extra cooler fleece now
1 x 100g full neck stable rug, it's either a Masta or Weatherbeeta (think Masta). Rarely use it because, like the fleece, it slips back and ends up rubbing.

He will have either a high blanket clip or a hunter clip this year :) Is a very hot horse and even when it was -18C last winter, didn't need much more than the 220g with a high trace clip.

Mine has:

1 x lightweight rain sheet (no neck) - for early autumn

1 x middleweight with integral neck - wears pretty much up until Xmas

1 x heavyweight with integral neck - for freezing temps/snow

He is fully clipped out and does not have stable rugs - he stays in the same outdoor rugs as then eliminates the problem of trying to dry them off! Also the rain washes off any stable stains.

The only other rug he has is a thermatex cooler to wear to and from hunting or competitions.

Hope that helps!

In the stable - hood and neck lycra with medium weight and heavy weight Combos or 2 heavys if its extra cold

Turn out - Outdoor hood with ears and heavy wieight combo and medium weight stable quilt if exxtra cold or if its really cold stay in.

She likes to be snugg and bsides i wouldnt like to be too cold

Don't have stable rugs, even when stabled use outdoor rugs (only exception to this was when she was on box rest for a couple of months last year in Augusts when I just used a sheet for the chillier evenings). Horse has a couple more rugs than this but in the years I've owned her the only ones I've ever used are;

-no fill rainsheet (removable neck)
-LW 100g (removable neck)
-MW about 200g (is very old so have no idea on actual original weight, but this is about what it is now, removable neck)

TBH if your buying a wardrobe I would say the only things you *need* for pretty much any horse are these plus a fleece/cooler and you're covered :) ETS this did her fine when she had a high trace clip too :)

Too many to mention and she hates them all!!!
Medium weight outdoor with neck / medium weight without neck
Heavy weight outdoor with neck x3(!)
Medium weight indoor with neck / medium weight indoor without neck 3+
Various quilted under rugs / various fleeces
I am selling some though...just got too many (I use my favourites and the others just sit bagged up in cupboards and frustrate my other half!) and have hardly used any during the last winter and I annoy myself with te constant dilemma of which ones to use! my mare will be pleased!!!

If I was starting from scratch I'd get:

LW
MW half/full neck
Some sort of cooler/travel sheet

Quarter Sheet (decent wool one)

After that I'd play it by ear depending on what was needed.
I don't buy blankets 'just because I can' nowadays ;)

I have 12 horses of my own, nothing has a specific blanket, there is a stack of MW's in every size from 56" to 82" in the barn, I can dress most of the horses here with that lot. If a horse is cold I double up.

A couple of the oldies have LW's for Fall when the nights start getting a bit chilly.

I don't possess a stable rug, if a horse needed one then I'll swipe a duvet off a bed and put it under a summer sheet.

OP I would try and get a turnout rug that has a weight between the no fill and the 300g, a 200g maybe?

Ditto this :)

What size are you after? ;)

My oldie had:

x2 LW no fill, one with a with removable neck

100gm Rambo, with removable neck

200gm Rambo with neck, 200gm Rhino with neck

x2 370 gm Rhino HWs, with necks

420 gm Rambo supreme

Most of which I'm selling as she has passed away & I've vet bills to cover.

they are all 6'9"s if anyone is looking...

Chico has (for all seasons)

1 x cotton sheet
1 x half fly sheet/half waterproof turnout with neck
2 x LW turnout no neck
1 x LW turnout with neck
2 x MW turnout with neck
1 x HW turnout with neck
1 x HW turnout with detachable neck

1 x extra light stable no neck
1 x medium stable no neck
1 x heavy stable with neck

2 x full neck fly sheets
1 x half mesh half cotton cooler
1 x 'string vest' cooler
2 x fleece sheet

(1 x waterproof exercise, 1 x fleece exercise, 1 x hiviz exercise)

I like him to have at least 2 of each weight for turnouts so if one gets soaked he has a second dry one to wear while the first one dries.

My 6yr old WB is currently wearing a 200g full neck, he also has a no fill standard neck which he has on in summer, but has a 350 full neck for winter, a fleece, thermatex, 250 standard stable, and 300 full neck stable. Personally i dont like the detachable necks as they rub off his mane!

Last year I was in the same situation as you, he had
-A light weight turn out no fill that he wore untill he was clipped
-A medium weight TO
-A heavy weight turn out with a neck
-A meduim weight stable rug
-A fleece
-A duvet mum was going to throw out, put under the stable rug when cold

Over the winter I went bargin hunting so added a TO thats between a no fill and medium so thats really helpful on inbetween days, a lycra hood great for an extra layer when cold and stops his face becoming hairy, a waffle rug and have recently got an under rug with a neck (cheaper than a stable rug but has all the straps so can be used on its own). The only rug I have payed full price for was the no fill turnout as he trashed one and needed another one soon, most of my rugs have been show offers or on sale.

Stable, mid winder, fully clipped - full neck fleece + Masta high neck 450g stable rug. Sometimes bandages if she still feels a bit chilly.

Turnout, mid winter, fully clipped - Full neck fleece + Premiere equine 450g turnout rug with turnout wraps (Mud fever!!)

Riding mid winter, fully clipped - Thermatex exercise sheet and bandages

Yes. I am a soft touch, however I was bought this mare as a poor winter doer and she wintered fantastically last year with this amount of rugs (Sometimes she had a MW + HW on as it was -25oC at one point here!!!) so I rug her up to the eyeballs rather then feed her alot :D

My entire rugging wardrobe consists of:
Masta full neck fleece
Masta standard neck fleece
Masta cooler
MW stable rug
Super heavyweight stable rug

One rainsheet
One mediumweight standard neck 200g
One heavyweight full neck 300g
One super heavyweight 450g

Then from my last horse I still have
One show sheet
One full neck fleece
One show fleece
Weatherbeeta rainsheet
2x weatherbeeta mediumweights

Unclipped shire x - he has one no fill rain sheet and one 100g turnout and that's it. He'll mainly stay un-rugged. It's so hard to find rugs to fit him it stops us buying them!
