My older dog has recently been put to sleep. Horrible. But im going to get another dog to keep my mind off things; i have always wanted a gundog but also like to be different :p sooo ive been thinking either a german long haired pointer or a long haired weimaraner or a poodle/lab/pointer?? All quite different. Just wondered if anyone had any knowledge of these breeds?
Thank you :)
Any extra breed suggustions are verrrrrry welcome!

Mollymoomin on here has a long haired Weim. Don't know how common they or German long haired pointers are in the UK in terms of getting your hands on one.
I think standard poodles are fab dogs :)

Irish water spaniels are cool - and low shedding too :)

The only spangle I would own as they are proper dog sized!

I could help with a German Wirehaired Pointer or a Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla lol - I think I'm stuck on repeat!! :p German Longhairs I *think* are on the rare breeds list still, could be wrong but I know not many of them are around. I think my mum knows someone who breeds them but I couldn't offer you any info on them as a breed

Just to add, the reason ive chosen these breeds is because i have been able to find litters of them so they are all available as such depending on what i choose! Thank you so far though :)

p.s inky and sunny, i looked at irish water spaniels but couldnt find any puppies otherwise would have been very tempted!

The lady who runs our dog walking service owns two Portuguese Water Dogs. They are fabulous dogs--non-shedding, friendly to all and active.

I think most people know most people either directly or indirectly lol. I don't have much to do with working or showing, it's always been mum's thing mainly (I prefer agility) but I have a vague idea who's who - ish! lol

I know who your mum is and was once told by another wire breeder that I would get on very well with you (she simply referred to you as *your mums* daughter) cos ''you like terriers and agility and horses and all that nonsense like she does!'' ;)

We have a normal weimaraner :)
They are really good loyal dogs, really affectionate but do get quite anxious and im not sure how much i'd trust ours to be a gun dog (He ate 5 big packs of cheese of the table yesterday!) I would recommend them though they are great dogs! :)

IWSs are hard work and a challenging breed for even the most experienced dog owner, I definitely wouldn't recommend one as your first gu dog, and definitely not because they look different. They can be difficult to socialise - funny with strange people and dogs, they are very late to mature, intelligent, stubborn as hell and awkward sods! Frustrating is not the word!
You'll also find the puppies worth buying come with a long waiting list and an interrogation attached!

Lovely dogs for the right people, very one to one so loyal as hell, you feel mighty safe walking one! But personally wouldn't have another.

I have an English Pointer, I think they are fairly rare as pets (I haven't seen ANY as pets), and everyone I meet whilst walking him always stop me to ask me what breed he is and comment on how noble looking he is.....:o

From my exp with weimys they're very, very energetic and very, very smart... not that you'd think it watching them sometimes :p so if you live an active lifestyle they'd be great.
I used to work for someone who bred standard poodles. They were great dogs, minus the daft haircuts

Ooo I'm intrigued now, who was it :p lol

Damn no hiding now!! :D lol

I have a German shorthaired pointer, He is a great dog, full of energy, loves cuddles and very trainable. He's super with childern and other dogs (had many snap at him and he walks away).

I went to scope out IWS as a companion for my last bitch and Kirstyhen is right, very aloof and not interested in people much!

Correct me if I am wrong also, but as they are bred to have hairless tails and faces, they can also get alopecia spots on other areas of the body.

Lol Annette you don't give up do you?! :D

Hector (the chocolate boy in my sig) is wirehaired pointer x vizsla and is a fab gun dog. More pointer in looks and always gets complemented on his hairy beard!

Have to admit, I wouldn't fancy picking the sticky burs and thorns out of an IWS after a busy day! :D

ETA: Sorry to hear about your dog by the way :(

i would love a great dane! used to look after a great dane every weekend til he died :(

iws seem like hard work lol i like a loving dog

i just dont know! i looked at a w.h pointer cross viszla but was around 8 hours away...! would like one though!
